The United Kingdom has barred two prominent left‑wing American political commentators, Cenk Uygur and his nephew Hasan Piker, from entering the country, revoking their travel authorisations ahead of scheduled appearances at the SXSW London festival and a speaking engagement at the University of Oxford. Both men were informed of the decision as they attempted to board flights to London, and they immediately blamed British authorities for suppressing free speech over their critical public statements about Israel. The Home Office, however, issued a statement that did not mention Israel, simply stating that the two men’s presence “may not be conducive to the public good”.
Cenk Uygur, 56, a Turkish‑American co‑host of the popular YouTube channel The Young Turks, and his 34‑year‑old nephew Hasan Piker, one of the largest political streamers on Twitch, had been scheduled to speak at the SXSW London festival later this week. Uygur was also due to deliver a speech at the Oxford Union. On Monday, June 1, 2026, Uygur announced on social media that his travel authorisation had been revoked. “The British government is saying they’re banning me because I am ‘a serious risk to the public order’ due to my criticism of Israel,” he wrote, calling the situation “absolutely Kafkaesque”. Piker confirmed that his visa had also been revoked, stating: “The UK has revoked my visa as well. All at the behest of Israel.”
The Home Office’s statement refused to name the individuals directly, but confirmed that travel authorisations “for these individuals” had been cancelled because “their presence in the UK may not be conducive to the public good”. The statement made no reference to Israel or to any specific comments made by the pair. A Home Office spokesperson emphasised that the decision was taken under existing immigration rules and that “the government is committed to protecting the public from those whose presence in the UK would not be conducive to the public good”.
The ban has drawn immediate criticism from free‑speech advocates and political figures. Green Party leader Zack Polanski accused the Labour government of “silencing criticism of the Israeli government”. “This is a really grim decision,” Polanski wrote. “A Labour government doing everything possible to silence criticism of the Israeli government.” Others, however, pointed to past statements by both Uygur and Piker that have been labelled as antisemitic. Uygur has previously asserted that “Israel controls the American government” – a claim he insists is factual but that critics have called an anti‑Semitic trope. Piker has also faced controversy for comments such as calling Hamas “1,000 times better” than Israel and stating he “would vote for Hamas over Israel every single time”.
The ban on Uygur and Piker comes just weeks after Britain barred the American rapper Ye, formerly Kanye West, from entering the country over a history of anti‑Semitic remarks. In May 2026, the Home Office also refused entry to 11 foreign far‑right activists who had been due to speak at an event organised by the anti‑Islam activist Tommy Robinson.
The two commentators have previously travelled to the United Kingdom without issue, and both expressed shock at the sudden revocation. “I’ve been banned for criticising Israel,” Uygur wrote on X. “Are we free anymore?” Piker echoed the sentiment: “This is straight‑up fascism. Being critical of Israel while combating anti‑Semitism is a waste of time – they will never let you into their club. The West is betraying ‘liberal values’ for a genocidal fascist foreign government.” As of Monday evening, the Home Office had offered no further explanation, leaving the two American commentators stranded and their speaking engagements abruptly cancelled.
