The Abia State Police Command has arrested 17 suspected cultists, aged between 18 and 28 years, in a major crackdown on cult-related violence in Aba and its environs. The arrests followed two recent deadly attacks: one on 13 May 2026 at No. 29 Brass Road, Aba, where a young man was shot and macheted to death by suspected cultists, and another on 24 May 2026 at Ehere near Opobo Junction, where another victim was shot. Acting on actionable intelligence, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) apprehended the suspects at their meeting points and while they were reportedly on their way to commit further crimes.
Exhibits recovered from the suspects include five short guns, three live ammunition, thirteen mobile phones of different makes, two cutlasses, one axe, and one black beret. The command stated that investigations have been concluded and the suspects are being charged to court.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property and assured Abians that there will be no hiding place for cultism and other criminal activities in the state. The command continues its awareness campaign through the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) unit in schools and communities, and urged members of the public to partner with the police by reporting any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or via the command’s emergency hotlines.
