A wave of tension has swept through Ogbomoso in Oyo State after unknown gunmen attacked the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) office located along the busy Ogbomoso–Ilorin expressway, near the NNPC filling station and the Ayanyan Cattle Market. The assault occurred on Tuesday night, 2 June 2026, at approximately 10:00 pm, while commercial and market activities were still ongoing in the vicinity.

According to multiple news reports, the armed assailants stormed the immigration facility, overpowered the officers on duty, and dispossessed them of their firearms. The exact number of weapons stolen could not be immediately confirmed. “During the attack, officers on duty were reportedly overpowered and dispossessed of their firearms,” a Vanguard report stated. After the operation, the attackers fled the scene under the cover of darkness, disappearing into the night.

A reliable source within Ogbomoso, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident to Daily Post. “It was learnt that the officers on duty were dispossessed of their guns,” the publication reported. The Ogbomoso Insight online platform added that the attack occurred “while the nearby Ayanyan Cattle Market was roiling with activities, with officers on duty being dispossessed of their guns (number unknown) which the criminals reportedly carted away.”

When contacted for an official response, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, told reporters that he had not yet been briefed on the incident. “I have not been briefed on the incident at this time. I will provide updates as soon as the necessary information becomes available,” the police spokesman stated. As of the time of filing this report on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the attack.

The immigration office targeted in the raid is situated on the Ogbomoso–Ilorin expressway, a strategic highway that serves as a major link between Oyo State and the northern region. The presence of the Ayanyan Cattle Market nearby means that the area is usually bustling with economic activity even at night, suggesting that the attackers may have chosen the timing deliberately to exploit the surrounding commotion.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the vulnerability of federal security installations in the Ogbomoso axis, which has been the scene of repeated security breaches over the past year. In May 2026, armed bandits carried out a series of coordinated attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Ahoro‑Esinele; and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, abducting 46 pupils and teachers and killing several others. Those attacks remain unresolved, with the victims still in captivity.

The assault on the immigration office also draws attention to the persistent circulation of illegal firearms, which has been cited by security analysts as a key factor enabling banditry and urban crime. By targeting a government facility specifically to steal service rifles, the attackers have demonstrated a level of audacity that underscores the deteriorating security situation in parts of the South‑West.

As of Wednesday morning, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack, and the Nigeria Immigration Service had not released any statement regarding the incident or the welfare of its personnel. Efforts to obtain comments from the state command of the NIS were unsuccessful. Residents of Ogbomoso have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to security agencies.

The Oyo State Police Command has yet to issue an official briefing, and it remains unclear whether any reinforcements have been deployed to the area or whether a manhunt has been launched for the fleeing gunmen. The development adds another layer of urgency to the ongoing debate about the security of federal assets and the safety of personnel in regions where armed groups have become increasingly bold.
