The Delta State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has secured the conviction of four suspected oil pipeline vandals, marking another significant victory in the ongoing fight against economic sabotage in the Niger Delta. Justice O. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court sitting in Asaba found Sylvania Elvis, Peter Ojichini, Bala Idris Adey and Joel Bala Emmanuel guilty of conspiracy and tampering with oil pipelines, offences that have long plagued the region’s oil infrastructure.
In his judgment, Justice Olubanjo held that the prosecution, led by the NSCDC, had proved the essential elements of the charges beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction of the four men on all counts. They were subsequently sentenced to prison terms, although the exact length of the sentences was not disclosed in the NSCDC statement. The convicts were investigated by intelligence officers of the Delta State Command, whose painstaking efforts were praised by the Corps.
Reacting to the conviction, the Delta State Commandant of the NSCDC, Chinedu F. Igbo, issued a stern warning to criminals engaged in the vandalism of oil pipelines and other critical national assets. He urged them to desist from all forms of vandalism and become law-abiding citizens. Commandant Igbo advised those involved in criminal activities to take advantage of legitimate empowerment opportunities and to avoid the serious consequences that accompany economic sabotage. He also assured members of the public that the NSCDC Delta State Command would continue its relentless efforts to protect the nation’s economic assets.
Pipeline vandalism and oil theft have long been endemic in the Niger Delta, leading to massive environmental degradation, loss of government revenue, and frequent disruptions to oil production. The region has also seen a surge in illegal refining activities, which are often fuelled by the theft of crude oil from pipelines. The conviction of the four suspects is part of a broader crackdown by the NSCDC, which has been working closely with other security agencies to dismantle the networks of vandals and illegal oil bunkerers.
The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure and vowed to sustain its intelligence-driven operations against vandals. The Corps called on members of the public to support its efforts by providing credible information on the activities of suspected vandals in their communities.
