Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has threatened to release the names of politicians he claims are behind the abduction of pupils and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, accusing the state government of blocking his offer to rescue the captives.

Speaking on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, at his residence in the Soka area of Ibadan, while receiving the newly elected executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) led by Akinteye Bàbàtunde, Igboho alleged that certain politicians were funding and arming criminal groups responsible for the 15 May attack on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School. “If I am permitted to burst into the hideouts, they will flee. They are neither gnomes nor mannequins; they are humans, so that they could be dislodged,” Igboho said in a video that has since gone viral. “I know the politicians behind them, and if they do not stop perpetrating their evil acts, I will mention them all. I know them. The politicians behind them are the ones giving them ammunition and money.”

The activist also claimed he had volunteered to lead an operation to flush out the kidnappers but was stopped by the Oyo State Government. He insisted he never demanded any financial compensation from Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration for the rescue of the 47 abductees. “Later, they (Oyo government) informed me that the kidnappers said if I try to force myself to come rescue the children, they will kill them all. If they are serious about rescuing the victims, they should tell my boys and me to chase them out of the forests in our regions and see if those people will remain there even with their bombs and sophisticated weapons,” Igboho stated.

Igboho further disclosed that although the Federal Government had approved his security network, “Iru Ekun,” the Oyo State Government warned him against operating in the state, insisting that any attempt by him to rescue the children might lead to their death. “After I arranged ‘Iru Ekun’ security network, the Federal Government permitted me, but the state government said no security must take a step behind them. Do we have to wait for him to flood the forests to rescue these children?” he queried.

The activist linked the worsening insecurity to a broader political agenda aimed at undermining President Bola Tinubu’s administration. “The same thing they did to Jonathan is what they are doing to Tinubu. They want to make the country ungovernable for him. They even have fake news propaganda to scare the masses and divert supporters away from the President,” Igboho alleged. He also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, whom he credited for securing his freedom during his period of exile abroad.

The abduction, which occurred on 15 May 2026, saw armed bandits on motorcycles storm the three schools, killing an assistant headmaster and a commercial motorcyclist, abducting 39 pupils and seven teachers, and later beheading a mathematics teacher in a viral video. The victims remain in captivity, with security agencies continuing rescue operations despite the deployment of additional resources and the recruitment of forest guards.

As of Thursday, 4 June 2026, Igboho had not yet named any politician. The Oyo State Government has not commented on his allegations. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared an indefinite strike in Oyo State, and civil society groups have held protests demanding the victims’ release.
