Growing insecurity in Zamfara State has intensified concerns among residents following reports that a secondary school teacher was killed by bandits despite the payment of ransom, while security agencies continue efforts to rescue students recently abducted in a separate attack.

The victim, identified as Mustapha Yahaya Maru, a teacher at Federal Government College, Anka, was reportedly abducted earlier in May while travelling with other passengers in Zamfara State. According to reports, his family negotiated with the kidnappers and raised ransom funds in the hope of securing his freedom. However, the teacher was later reported killed despite the payment.

The incident has renewed fears among residents over the growing trend of kidnappers demanding ransom without guaranteeing the safety or release of their victims. Community members described the killing as a tragic reminder of the deteriorating security situation affecting many parts of the North-West.

The development comes days after armed bandits attacked off-campus student accommodation in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area and abducted seven students of Federal Polytechnic Kaura Namoda. Security agencies later confirmed that one of the students escaped, while rescue operations remain ongoing for the others.

The Zamfara State Police Command has stated that joint security teams, including personnel of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, were mobilised following the attack and have intensified efforts to locate the abducted students and apprehend those responsible.

Authorities have not confirmed any deaths among the abducted students, and no credible source has verified claims that a student was killed after ransom payment in the recent Kaura Namoda abduction case.

The incidents underscore the continuing security challenges facing Zamfara State, where bandit groups have repeatedly targeted schools, communities, travellers, and rural settlements for kidnappings and extortion. Security agencies continue operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating across the region.
