Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George, has criticized the recent call by Enoch Adeboye for Nigeria's service chiefs to eliminate terrorism within 90 days or resign, arguing that such advice should be directed at President Bola Tinubu rather than military commanders.
George made the remarks on Friday, June 5, 2026, in a public statement reacting to comments made earlier in the week by Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). Adeboye had urged the Federal Government to give security chiefs a 90-day ultimatum to defeat terrorists and their sponsors or leave office, citing worsening insecurity across the country. According to George, while religious leaders and citizens have the right to offer suggestions on national issues, the responsibility for the nation's security ultimately rests with the Commander-in-Chief. He argued that the President, who appoints the service chiefs, should be the focus of calls for accountability if security objectives are not being met. (Naija News)
George stated that the President possesses the constitutional authority to appoint, direct, discipline, or remove service chiefs. Therefore, he said, any demand for improved security outcomes should be addressed primarily to the nation's political leadership rather than to officers carrying out directives under presidential authority. The elder statesman, who is also a retired military officer, expressed concern over the continuing wave of kidnappings, terrorist attacks, and violent crimes across Nigeria. He lamented the abduction of citizens in different parts of the country and argued that insecurity has become the most pressing national challenge facing the government. (Naija News)
George further warned that continued insecurity could have significant implications for governance and democratic participation if not urgently addressed. He argued that security issues should take precedence over political calculations and preparations for future elections. (Naija News)
As part of his recommendations, George called on President Tinubu to convene a high-level security meeting involving retired military commanders, intelligence experts, serving security chiefs, and other stakeholders to review Nigeria's security architecture and develop more effective strategies against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and violent crime. The controversy began on June 2, 2026, when Adeboye released a video message through his official X account in which he urged the Federal Government to move decisively against terrorism. In the message, he suggested that security chiefs should be given a three-month deadline to eliminate terrorists and their sponsors or resign from office. (Channels Television)
Adeboye's comments generated widespread public debate, with supporters arguing that security officials should be held accountable for results, while critics questioned whether responsibility should rest primarily with the military leadership or with elected political authorities. (Punch Newspapers)
As of the time of reporting, neither the Presidency nor Nigeria's service chiefs had issued an official response to George's latest remarks. The debate, however, has added to broader national discussions about accountability, security sector reform, and the government's response to terrorism and violent crime.
