The Kaduna State Police Command has rescued three kidnapped victims who spent more than 40 days in captivity and arrested five suspected informants linked to the abduction syndicate, in a breakthrough that underscores the critical role of intelligence-driven policing in combating banditry across Nigeria’s North‑West region. The operation was carried out by a joint security team led by personnel from Fushin Kada in collaboration with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Hunkuyi.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Hassan explained that the rescue and arrests followed sustained intelligence gathering, strategic surveillance, and coordinated security efforts that led operatives to a suspected bandits’ hideout. “Upon sighting the advancing security personnel, the bandits fled the area, abandoning the victims who were subsequently rescued unharmed,” he said. The operation marked a rare victory in a region where kidnapping for ransom has become a lucrative and violent enterprise.
The rescued victims were identified as Ekechikwu Omale, Ummi Salisu of Kudan Local Government Area in Kaduna State, and Pastor Daniel Tanko Bawa of Tufa Village in Niger State. According to police sources, the three had been held in captivity for well over a month, enduring harsh conditions before their rescue. Hassan said the victims were taken to the police clinic for medical examination and treatment before being reunited with their families. No information was released regarding whether any ransom payments had been made prior to the rescue.
In a significant parallel development, the police revealed that five suspected informants were arrested during the course of the investigation. Preliminary investigations showed that the suspects allegedly provided information and logistical support to the kidnappers. “The suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime during interrogation,” Hassan stated. The arrests are seen as a crucial step toward dismantling the support networks that enable kidnapping syndicates to operate with impunity across Kaduna State. Security analysts have long warned that informants—often embedded within local communities—are the linchpins of banditry, providing intelligence on victim movements, security patrol routes, and safe hiding spots.
The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, CP Rabiu Muhammad, commended the professionalism, dedication, and collaboration among security agencies that led to the successful operation. Muhammad reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state. He also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, noting that community cooperation remained critical in the fight against criminality. The police commissioner added that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal network and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
The rescue comes amid a surge in abduction cases across Kaduna State, which has become a hotspot for kidnapping-for-ransom gangs operating from forest enclaves in Birnin Gwari, Chikun, and Kajuru local government areas. Victims are typically held for weeks or months, with families forced to sell land, livestock, or borrow heavily to meet escalating ransom demands. While the police have recorded successes in recent weeks—including the foiling of cattle rustling attempts and the recovery of 245 stolen cattle—the underlying insecurity persists.
For the families of Ekechikwu Omale, Ummi Salisu, and Pastor Daniel Tanko Bawa, the wait is finally over. For the five suspects now in custody, the reckoning has begun. And for the people of Kaduna, the operation offers a rare glimmer of hope that intelligence-led policing, combined with community vigilance, can push back against a tide of violence that has claimed too many lives and disrupted too many livelihoods. Whether that promise translates into sustained security will depend on continued cooperation between citizens and the security agencies tasked with protecting them.
