AROCHUKWU, Nigeria – Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested three suspected arms dealers and recovered a cache of weapons, including locally fabricated Dane guns and live cartridges, during a cordon-and-search operation in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of Sunday, June 7, 2026, was carried out by soldiers from the Headquarters 14 Brigade Nigerian Army under the ongoing Operation Eastern Sanity II. According to a press release issued by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 14 Brigade, Mazinho Attah, troops of the 14 Brigade Garrison and the 14 Military Intelligence Regiment conducted the raid at Amaetiti Iheshiowa community following credible intelligence reports about the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition in the area.

During the exercise, security operatives apprehended three suspects identified as Francis Ifere (37 years old), Oso Kalu (40 years old), and Ifere Oti (32 years old). Items recovered from the suspects included seven locally fabricated Dane guns, twenty-two live cartridges, and one motorcycle believed to be connected to their illicit activities.

The troops also impounded a bus belonging to one Stephen Kalu, who reportedly fled the area before the arrival of security personnel. The military said the bus was taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

Acting Assistant Director Attah confirmed in the statement that the operation was part of the Nigerian Army's intensified efforts to combat the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition across the South-East, and to strengthen overall security in Abia State and its environs. The military disclosed that troops across various battalion areas within the Brigade's Area of Responsibility have continued to intensify night fighting patrols, surveillance missions, and routine security operations "aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of movement and ensuring the protection of lives and property".

The successful raid was conducted in collaboration with other security agencies, reflecting a coordinated multi-agency approach to tackling criminal networks in the region. The 14 Brigade Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining aggressive security operations in collaboration with other security agencies to guarantee lasting peace, stability, and security across Abia State and its environs.

Arochukwu Local Government Area, located in the southeastern part of Abia State, has in recent years witnessed a rise in criminal activities linked to the proliferation of illegal firearms, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and communal conflicts. The recovery of seven Dane guns and twenty-two live cartridges represents a significant blow to the local illegal arms network, although the origin of the weapons and the identities of their ultimate suppliers remain under investigation.

The three arrested suspects are currently in military custody and are undergoing further interrogation to determine their possible links to larger arms trafficking syndicates operating across the South-East and beyond. The military has not disclosed whether the suspects will be handed over to the Nigeria Police Force or the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for prosecution, but sources indicated that legal proceedings would commence once preliminary investigations are concluded.

Operation Eastern Sanity II, under which the raid was conducted, is a region-wide security initiative launched by the Nigerian Army earlier in 2026 to combat violent crimes, illegal arms proliferation, and separatist violence across the five South-Eastern states. The operation includes targeted raids, intelligence-led patrols, and community engagement exercises designed to win the trust of local populations while isolating criminal elements.

Residents of the Amaetiti Iheshiowa community have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel by providing timely and credible information that could assist ongoing efforts to combat crime and illegal arms proliferation in the area. The Nigerian Army has appealed to members of the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest military or police formation.

As of the time of this report, no official statement had been issued by the Abia State Government regarding the arrests. The three suspects remain in military detention, and the recovered weapons and exhibits are being kept as evidence pending further investigation and possible prosecution.
