A lone crash involving a commercial bus at the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway has claimed the life of one passenger and left 13 others with varying degrees of injury, the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed on Sunday.

The incident occurred at about 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2026, around the Eruku Bridge corridor, a known accident black spot in Ogun State. According to the FRSC spokesperson for the Ogun Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi, a total of 16 persons were involved in the crash, comprising two adult males, 12 adult females, and two female children. “One adult female lost her life, while 13 others, including two adult males and 11 adult females, sustained injuries. Two female children escaped unhurt,” Odunsi disclosed.

The FRSC attributed the crash to a combination of excessive speed and a tyre burst. The vehicle involved was identified as a white Mazda bus with registration number MUS 543XZ. “The probable causes of the crash were speed violation and tyre burst,” Odunsi stated.

Rescue operatives arrived at the scene within five minutes of receiving the distress call and immediately began evacuating the victims. The injured passengers were rushed to the State Specialist Hospital in Ifo for prompt medical care, while the body of the deceased was deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

Videos shared from the accident scene by a Facebook user, Akinola Oluwarantimi, showed sympathisers attempting to rescue people from the wreckage of the overturned vehicle. The bus was seen lying on its side, while several victims sat on the floor groaning in pain. One female victim was seen lying motionless on the expressway with blood stains visible on the asphalt.

The FRSC also noted that personal belongings, including jewellery and bags, were recovered from the accident scene.

The tragic incident occurred barely a month after another fatal crash at the same Eruku Bridge, where 11 persons lost their lives after a gold-coloured Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ plunged off the bridge. In that May 11 incident, all 11 occupants of the vehicle, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, died in the accident.

Following Sunday’s crash, the FRSC advised motorists to regularly inspect their tyres and avoid excessive speed, particularly on highways, to prevent avoidable road crashes.
