AWKA, Nigeria – Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have foiled an alleged attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby girl in Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area, the police confirmed on Sunday. Acting on a tip-off from a concerned citizen on Friday, June 19, 2026, officers from the Oyi Divisional Headquarters moved swiftly to the location, where they found the young mother and her infant daughter and secured them before any transaction could be completed.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had concealed both her pregnancy and delivery from her parents and had left her family home in Imo State to stay with a friend in Igbariam. He explained that “the police promptly secured both the mother and her infant daughter and facilitated their reunion with family members to ensure proper care, protection and support”. The police immediately contacted the woman's parents, who responded without delay and took custody of both mother and child. The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, commended the vigilance of the complainant and the public, reaffirming the command's commitment to protecting children from abuse, exploitation, trafficking and neglect. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and bring any culpable individuals to justice.
