A woman has been killed and set ablaze by a mob in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following allegations of child theft that later triggered widespread condemnation from security authorities.
According to a statement issued by the Kaduna State Police Command on June 21, 2026, the incident began after the woman was accused by some residents of attempting to abduct a child. Police officers reportedly intervened and initially rescued her from the angry crowd, taking her into protective custody at a police station in the area while investigations were expected to continue.
However, the situation escalated when a larger crowd allegedly regrouped and stormed the police facility. The command stated that the mob overpowered officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from custody, and attacked her outside the station before setting her body on fire. The police described the act as a grave violation of the law and confirmed that the victim died at the scene.
The police identified the location as Maraban Jos, a densely populated community along the Kaduna–Jos axis in Igabi LGA, and said the incident occurred on June 21, 2026. Authorities also disclosed that the victim was a resident of the area, though her identity was not immediately released to the public at the time of the initial statement.
The Kaduna State Police Command, through its spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan, condemned the killing, describing it as “barbaric” and an assault on the rule of law. The command further confirmed that investigations had commenced, with efforts underway to identify and arrest individuals involved in the mob action.
Security sources indicated that several arrests have since been made as part of ongoing investigations, while additional suspects remain under pursuit. The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned against mob justice and urged residents to allow lawful processes to determine guilt or innocence in all criminal allegations.
The incident has drawn attention to a recurring pattern of mob violence in parts of Nigeria, where unverified accusations—particularly involving child theft or ritual suspicions—have led to fatal attacks before law enforcement verification. Similar incidents have been recorded in other states in recent years, often resulting in deaths, arrests, and renewed calls for public awareness campaigns against jungle justice.
In a comparable case cited in previous security reports, a woman was also killed in Rivers State after being accused of child theft, despite later indications that the allegation was unsubstantiated before escalation by a mob. Human rights observers have repeatedly warned that misinformation and panic-driven responses often contribute to such violent outcomes.
Authorities in Kaduna State have reiterated their call for calm and urged communities to report suspicious activity to security agencies rather than resorting to violence. They also emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that those found culpable will face prosecution under the law.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the victim and the full list of suspects involved had not been officially released, while security operations continue in the area.
