Operatives of the have intercepted a truck allegedly conveying thousands of military-style camouflage uniforms, cartons of suspected illicit drugs, and footwear, during a stop-and-search operation in Lagos State.
The interception took place on June 22, 2026, in Lagos, south-west Nigeria, according to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the seizure and gave details of the items recovered and initial steps taken by investigators.
Hundeyin said the operation was carried out by police operatives acting on credible intelligence and routine monitoring of vehicles along major transport routes. He stated that officers stopped the truck and subjected it to inspection after noticing irregularities in its documentation and cargo declaration.
He confirmed that officers discovered approximately 8,000 pieces of military camouflage uniforms inside the truck during the search. According to him, the items were not accompanied by valid authorisation documents required for the movement or distribution of such restricted materials within Nigeria.
The police spokesperson said the uniforms were immediately identified as regulated items under Nigerian law, which prohibits unauthorized possession, production, or circulation of military camouflage materials.
He further stated that officers also recovered 80 cartons of suspected illicit drugs concealed within the cargo. Hundeyin said the substances have been secured and handed over for forensic laboratory analysis to determine their exact composition.
He added that the analysis will form part of ongoing investigations into the nature of the substances and the circumstances surrounding their transportation.
In addition to the uniforms and suspected drugs, the truck was also found to be carrying a large quantity of shoes. Police said investigators are examining the cargo manifest to determine whether the footwear was legitimately declared or used to conceal restricted items.
Hundeyin confirmed that the driver of the truck has been taken into custody and is assisting investigators with information regarding the source of the goods, the intended destination, and individuals involved in the shipment.
He said the arrest was part of ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at preventing the movement of illegal or restricted items through commercial transport channels.
According to him, “The interception of these items demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and routine surveillance operations carried out across the state.”
The police spokesperson did not disclose the identity of the driver or any company linked to the truck at the time of the briefing.
He added that investigations are ongoing to identify all persons connected to the consignment, including those responsible for loading and dispatching the goods.
The command said the recovered camouflage uniforms remain in police custody as exhibits pending further investigation.
Police also stated that the suspected drugs have been secured and sent for laboratory examination to confirm their nature and classification.
Hundeyin noted that the presence of large quantities of military-style uniforms raises regulatory concerns due to restrictions governing their production and circulation in Nigeria.
He said such materials are controlled due to their potential misuse and are only permitted under strict legal authorization.
The Lagos State Police Command said it is working to trace the origin and movement route of the truck as part of efforts to establish a full chain of responsibility.
Investigators are also reviewing whether the shipment was part of a wider distribution network operating across multiple states.
Police confirmed that inter-agency cooperation may be engaged depending on the outcome of forensic analysis and ongoing investigations.
Hundeyin stated that further updates would be provided once preliminary findings are concluded and additional suspects are identified.
He added that the command remains committed to sustaining surveillance operations across Lagos highways and transport corridors to prevent the movement of prohibited goods.
Authorities have urged transport operators to ensure proper documentation of goods and compliance with existing regulations governing cargo movement.
At the time of reporting, no charges had been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
