The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State has suspended its State Chairman, Abubakar Muhammad Kana-Zuru, and the party chairman of Zuru Local Government Area, Aliyu Abubakar Abiola, following a disastrous performance in the recently concluded Zuru State Constituency by-election. The suspension, announced on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, came just hours after Governor Nasir Idris approved the immediate suspension of the state Commissioner for Livestock Development and Fisheries, Kabir Usman Alaramma Zuru, in a coordinated crackdown that has sent shockwaves through the state’s political establishment.

The party’s disciplinary action was announced in a statement signed by the APC State Secretary, Sa’idu Muhammad Kimba, and made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi. According to the statement, the decision followed formal complaints lodged by key stakeholders within the Zuru Emirate, who accused the affected officials of demonstrating a “lukewarm attitude” towards party activities, failing to effectively engage critical stakeholders, inadequate mobilisation of party supporters, and non-compliance with established party procedures. The party noted that an internal review and investigation validated the allegations, leading to the suspension of the two officials. The Deputy State Chairman has been directed to assume leadership of the party in an acting capacity pending further directives.

The suspensions have been directly linked to the outcome of the Zuru State Constituency by-election, which was conducted on Saturday, June 20, 2026, to fill the vacancy left by the late Hon. Muhammadu Usman Ankwe, a former Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly who passed away after a protracted illness. While the APC candidate, Rabiu Garba Aiki, emerged victorious, the election recorded a dramatically low voter turnout that has alarmed party leaders. Official figures revealed that out of more than 109,000 registered voters in the constituency, only about 5,000 participated in the election, raising serious concerns about grassroots mobilisation and political engagement in the area.

In a related development that underscores the gravity of the situation, Governor Nasir Idris approved the suspension of the Commissioner for Livestock Development and Fisheries, Kabir Usman Alaramma Zuru, with immediate effect. A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Yakubu Bala-Tafida, directed the commissioner to hand over all government property and official responsibilities in his custody to the Permanent Secretary of the ministry pending further action. The suspension will remain in force until further notice, according to the statement.

The simultaneous suspensions represent a significant political crisis for the APC in Kebbi State, coming just days after the party retained the Zuru State Constituency seat but with a performance that has been described as deeply concerning. Political observers have noted that the low turnout could signal growing voter apathy or dissatisfaction with the party in the Zuru Emirate, a development that could have implications for future electoral contests in the state. The APC, which is the ruling party in Kebbi, has yet to indicate how long the suspensions will last. All efforts made to reach the suspended officials for comment proved abortive, as calls placed to their phone lines and messages sent to them were not responded to as of the time of filing this report.
