FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has imposed a five-match suspension on Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo for the tackle that left Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné with a broken leg during their Group B clash at the 2026 World Cup. The incident occurred in the 56th minute of Canada's 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver on June 18, 2026. Chilean referee Cristián Garay initially showed Madibo a yellow card but, after reviewing the footage, upgraded it to a straight red card. The 29-year-old Qatari left the field in tears.

The tackle resulted in fractures to both the tibia and fibula in Koné's left leg. The 24-year-old Sassuolo midfielder, who previously played for Watford, underwent successful surgery shortly after the match and will miss the remainder of the tournament. Koné is expected to be sidelined for four to five months but is anticipated to make a full recovery.

FIFA confirmed the five-match suspension on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, classifying the infraction as "serious foul play" under its Disciplinary Code. The red card had already triggered an automatic one-game ban, which Madibo served in Qatar's final group match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday. Qatar lost that match 3-1, ending their World Cup campaign. Consequently, Madibo will have to serve the remaining four matches of his suspension during future FIFA competitions, most likely the 2027 Asian Cup. The decision is subject to appeal to the FIFA Appeal Committee.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, several Canada players reacted angrily, with defender Richie Laryea confronting Madibo. Canada head coach Jesse Marsch later revealed that he could "hear Koné's bone snap". However, Marsch also noted that Madibo came to the Canada locker room to apologize to Koné before the midfielder left for the hospital. "I don't think he meant such a gruesome situation," Marsch said. "I don't fault him for that". Madibo later visited Koné in hospital, and photos emerged of the two players embracing, with Koné temporarily confined to a wheelchair. Qatar's sports minister also visited the injured player.

Koné was wheeled onto the pitch in a wheelchair ahead of Canada's final group match against Switzerland at BC Place in Vancouver on Wednesday, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. Canada entered that match hoping to qualify for the knockout stage as group winners, while Qatar's campaign ended with the loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The suspension means Madibo will not feature for Qatar in any FIFA-sanctioned competition until the ban is fully served.
