In Bayelsa A Boy Allegedly Set Ablaze Over Theft of Wood

A young boy in Okodi Community, in Nigeria’s southern Bayelsa State, was allegedly set on fire after being accused of stealing pieces of wood, in an incident that has triggered outrage and calls for a criminal investigation.

The incident occurred in Okodi Community, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, although the exact date of the attack has not been officially disclosed by authorities. The case became public on June 24, 2026, after eyewitness accounts and videos circulated online. According to local reports, the suspect was identified by witnesses as Ibomanetein Owiefa, while the victim’s identity has not been publicly released.

According to eyewitness accounts cited by local media, the boy was accused of stealing a small quantity of structural wood belonging to a resident of the community.

Residents said the boy allegedly admitted taking the wood and pleaded for forgiveness after being confronted.

Witnesses further claimed that before the burning, the boy had already been subjected to community punishment over the alleged theft.

According to those accounts, he was beaten and reportedly made to pay part of the value of the wood as restitution.

Residents said they believed the matter had been resolved through the community’s informal disciplinary process.

However, witnesses alleged that the suspect later confronted the boy again after the initial punishment had been completed.

According to the reports, the suspect allegedly poured a flammable substance, believed to be petrol, on the boy.

The boy was then allegedly set on fire, resulting in severe burns across parts of his body.

Graphic footage circulating on social media showed the aftermath of the attack and sparked widespread public condemnation.

Local residents described the alleged act as shocking and grossly disproportionate to the accusation of theft.

One resident quoted by local media said, “Since when did stealing wood become a crime punishable by burning a human being?”

Concerned residents rushed the victim to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.

Reports indicate the boy sustained life-threatening burns, though hospital authorities have not released an official medical update.

As of the time of reporting, the victim’s condition remained unclear from official sources.

The case has generated widespread anger among community members and rights advocates.

Human rights campaigners have condemned the alleged attack as an extreme form of extrajudicial violence.

They stressed that theft allegations, regardless of value, remain criminal matters that should be handled through lawful police procedures and the courts.

Legal observers noted that no individual has the authority to impose violent punishment outside the legal system.

The incident has renewed concerns over jungle justice in parts of Nigeria, where suspects accused of theft are sometimes subjected to violence without trial.

Unlike mob attacks involving crowds, reports suggest this case involved a specific individual accused of carrying out the attack.

That distinction could assist investigators in identifying and prosecuting the suspect if the allegations are substantiated.

As of Thursday, the Bayelsa State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.

Police had also not publicly confirmed any arrest.

The traditional leadership of Okodi Community had similarly not released an official statement regarding the allegations.

The absence of official statements means key details—including the precise time of the attack and whether additional persons were involved—remain unconfirmed.

For now, the verified facts remain limited to eyewitness accounts, viral footage, and local media reporting.

Public attention is now focused on whether law enforcement authorities in Bayelsa will open a formal investigation and establish criminal responsibility.
