The Edo State Police Command has declared on the 24th of June, 2026 that its operatives successfully foiled a kidnapping attempt along the Benin–Abraka Road on June 21, 2026, rescuing all occupants of a commercial bus and forcing the armed suspects to flee. The incident occurred at approximately 6:46 p.m. when gunmen emerged at a failed portion of the road near the NNPC Pipeline axis and intercepted a Muyi Line Transport Company bus with registration number BEN 730 YE, which was traveling from Abraka to Benin City. According to a statement issued by the command's Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the armed suspects fired at the vehicle and forced the driver to stop.

The police statement claimed that upon receiving a distress call from a concerned source, operatives of the Ugo Division swiftly mobilised to the scene and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel. According to the official account, the criminals were forced to abandon their mission and flee into the surrounding bush due to the superior firepower and tactical response of the police. All occupants of the vehicle were reportedly rescued, with one passenger—Mr. Isaac Olotu Temitope of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State—sustaining a pellet injury to his right toe. He was taken to Ugo Health Centre where he received treatment and was discharged to continue his journey.

While the police account presents the operation as a clear victory, it is worth noting that the official narrative relies heavily on the command's own assessment of the incident. The statement does not indicate whether any of the suspects were arrested or neutralised, nor does it provide details about the number of attackers involved or the exact circumstances that led to their flight. The claim that the kidnappers were forced to abandon their mission due to "superior firepower" suggests an exchange of gunfire, but the police have not disclosed whether any rounds were fired by the suspects or whether any of the fleeing criminals were injured.

The incident comes amid growing public skepticism about the effectiveness of security operations in Edo State, where kidnappings and armed robberies have become increasingly frequent along major highways. The Benin–Abraka Road has been a hotspot for criminal activity, with travellers often falling victim to ambushes at isolated stretches of the route. The failed portion of the road near the NNPC Pipeline axis, where the incident occurred, has been a particular concern for motorists, who have repeatedly called on the government to repair the road and improve security along the corridor.

The Edo State Police Command has deployed reinforcement teams from the command headquarters to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects, according to the statement. Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, commended the swift response and bravery of the officers involved in the operation while reassuring residents and road users of the command's dedication to protecting lives and property. Members of the public have been encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or other security agencies.

However, for many residents and road users, the assurance of protection often feels hollow given the frequency of such incidents and the challenges of verifying police claims. The Edo State Police Command, like many security agencies across Nigeria, has a long history of allegations and skepticism regarding its claims of operational success. The absence of arrests or recovered weapons in this case may raise questions about the extent of the police's engagement with the suspects. The statement also does not disclose how many armed suspects were involved or whether any of them were injured or killed in the exchange.

The public's lack of trust in the Edo State Police Command is rooted in years of unfulfilled promises, alleged complicity in criminal activities, and a perceived inability to stem the tide of insecurity in the state. For now, the official account stands, but the absence of independent verification and the failure to apprehend any of the suspects may leave some wondering whether the incident was truly a victory or merely a temporary reprieve. As always, the police have urged the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide information that could assist in apprehending those responsible for crimes across the state.
