South Africa has etched its name into World Cup folklore, qualifying for the knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history with a stunning 1-0 victory over South Korea at the Estadio Monterrey in Mexico on Wednesday night. The result sends the Bafana Bafana through as Group A runners-up, igniting celebrations across the country and proving that an astonishing turnaround is possible after a dismal opening defeat.
The match, played in the early hours of Thursday morning in South Africa, was a high-stakes final group game. South Africa entered the contest knowing that only a win would guarantee their passage to the Round of 32. Facing a favoured South Korean side, they delivered when it mattered most.
The first half was a tense, goalless affair with both teams creating chances but failing to break the deadlock. South Africa, urged on by head coach Hugo Broos, who heeded calls to start Orlando Pirates' Relebohile Mofokeng, looked significantly more lively than in previous fixtures. Their best opportunity in the opening period came around the 30-minute mark when a superb team move saw Thapelo Maseko's shot saved, and the rebound from Thalente Mbatha was also denied from close range by goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.
South Korea, who had left their talismanic captain Son Heung-min on the bench, had their own chances, with a powerful header from stand-in captain Kim Min-jae blocked on the line. But it was the Bafana Bafana who grew into the game, pushing higher and looking more purposeful.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 63rd minute. A perfectly weighted pass from Tshepang Moremi found Maseko inside the box. The winger produced a sublime first touch before calmly firing a low finish past Kim Seung-gyu to send the South African fans into raptures.
South Korea, needing a goal to restore their second-place standing, introduced Son Heung-min and pushed forward, but a resolute South African defence, marshalled by a stellar performance from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, held firm. The Koreans, who only needed a draw to qualify, were lackluster and uninspired, failing to find the equalizer despite nearly 30 minutes to respond.
This victory completes a historic journey for South Africa. It is the first time the Bafana Bafana, who had previously failed to advance from the group stage in 1998, 2002, and as hosts in 2010, have reached the knockout rounds. The achievement is all the more remarkable given that they were widely written off after a 2-0 loss to Mexico in the tournament opener. They followed that disappointment with a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic, setting up a winner-takes-all clash with South Korea.
With Mexico securing a perfect record of nine points after a 3-0 win over Czechia, South Africa finished second in Group A with four points. This result also makes South Africa only the second African nation to qualify for the Round of 32, joining Morocco, who earlier progressed from Group C.
Speaking after the game, an emotional coach Hugo Broos described the achievement as difficult to put into words. "We scored that goal, and it was 20 minutes of heartbeating and hoping that the game should be finished as soon as possible," said the Belgian. "So yes, we are in the second round. It's historic. But I'm very happy for the guys. I've worked with them for five years. And what we did in those five years is amazing".
With their place in the knockout stage secured, South Africa is now set to face Canada in the Round of 32 on Sunday in Los Angeles. The South Koreans, who finished third with three points and a minus-one goal difference, must now wait anxiously to see if their record is enough to secure one of the tournament's remaining best third-place spots. For now, South Africa will celebrate a historic night in Monterrey as they look forward to a historic knockout match.
