A campaign rally for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State turned tragic on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, when a trailer ploughed into a crowd of party supporters in Ede, killing one person and leaving seven others injured. The incident occurred in the Oke Gada area of the town during a campaign walk organised in support of Bola Oyebamiji, the APC governorship candidate for the August 15 election.

The deceased has been identified as AbdulRasaq Ahmed. According to officials of the APC campaign organisation, the procession was part of mobilisation activities for the party's candidate when the accident occurred. The Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee of the Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji Campaign Committee, Remi Omowaiye, confirmed the casualty figures, stating that one person was killed and seven others were injured, with one of the injured in critical condition. The injured victims were rushed to private hospitals in Ofatedo and Ede for treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the trailer veered off its lane and ploughed into the party procession. The driver of the trailer reportedly claimed the vehicle suffered brake failure. However, an eyewitness who declined to be named called for an investigation, alleging that the truck driver ignored traffic directives issued by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) deployed to manage traffic during the rally. According to the witness, the FRSC coordinator had earlier directed that vehicles should use one lane of the road while APC members used the other lane. “However, the truck driver drove through the lane we were walking on and rammed into the crowd. The boy was killed in the process, while many got injured and are receiving treatment at the hospital,” the eyewitness said.

The Director of Media and Information of the APC in Osun State, Kola Olabisi, confirmed the incident, noting that the party was still awaiting full details and had dispatched a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Speaking after a condolence visit to the family of the deceased, the running mate to the APC governorship candidate, Benjamin Adereti, called for a thorough investigation. “We are still trying to unravel the reason behind this. The way the incident happened looked like the truck deliberately rammed into our party members in Ede while campaigning,” Adereti said. He appealed to security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident, stating: “If this is a deliberate action by Ademola Adeleke and the Accord Party to stop us from forging ahead with our campaign, I can assure them we are unstoppable”.

The Imole Campaign Council (TICC), the campaign organisation for Governor Ademola Adeleke's re-election bid, expressed condolences over the accident. In a statement, TICC spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi said the council was “profoundly saddened” by reports that a truck suffered brake failure and rammed into a procession of APC supporters. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the departed and everyone touched by the loss. The council wishes those injured a speedy recovery and prays against a recurrence of such incidents,” the statement read. However, the council also criticised the APC campaign organisation, alleging that party leaders continued political activities despite the loss of lives.

When contacted, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osun State Command, Agnes Ogungbemi, said the command had yet to receive any official report on the incident. The accident comes less than two months before the August 15 governorship election in Osun State, adding to the heightened political tension in the state. In a separate incident on the same day, an Accord Party supporter was reportedly shot dead in Esa Oke, Obokun Local Government Area, further escalating tensions.
