A wave of relief has swept through the Ode-Oriya community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State following the release of their traditional ruler, Chief Adeniyi Adelana, the Oloriya (Baale) of Ode-Oriya, who was abducted by armed gunmen on June 13, 2026. The monarch’s return to his family after several days in captivity brought an end to anxious moments for residents and family members, but the joy has been tempered by fresh anxiety over the fate of the individual who delivered the ransom demanded by the kidnappers.

According to a community announcement confirming his release, which circulated on social media, the traditional ruler is currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed health facility in the town and is responding well to treatment. The 60-year-old monarch was abducted when armed men invaded his residence under the cover of darkness. During the attack, his wife sustained gunshot injuries while allegedly trying to resist the assailants.

However, a fresh and troubling development has overshadowed the celebration. Reports indicate that the individual who was sent to deliver the ransom demanded by the kidnappers has been detained by the abductors. According to information contained in a community bulletin, the courier sent to facilitate the monarch’s release reportedly failed to return after carrying out the assignment. The development has heightened anxiety among residents, although security agencies are yet to officially confirm the report or disclose whether ransom was paid to secure the monarch’s freedom.

Following the abduction, security operatives, including personnel of the Ondo State Police Command and local vigilantes, launched an intensive search operation to secure the monarch’s release. The Ondo State Government had earlier promised to secure the release of the traditional ruler. The police command confirmed the abduction and launched a coordinated rescue operation. The attack occurred on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m., when about six armed men stormed the monarch's residence and forcefully whisked him away through a nearby bush path.

Residents of Ode-Oriya have expressed gratitude over the safe return of their traditional ruler while urging security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue anyone still being held captive and apprehend those responsible for the abduction. As of the time of filing this report, the Ondo State Police Command had yet to issue any statement on the alleged detention of the ransom bearer.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the rising cases of kidnapping and insecurity in parts of Ondo State. The abduction of the traditional ruler is part of a troubling trend of attacks on monarchs across Nigeria. Security experts have noted that these abductions often involve ransom demands running into tens of millions of naira, with outcomes varying from release after payment to fatalities in captivity.

As the Ode-Oriya community celebrates the return of their monarch, the fate of the ransom messenger hangs in the balance, underscoring the complex and often tragic dynamics of Nigeria's kidnapping crisis. The search for answers continues, and the community waits with bated breath, hoping for the safe return of yet another of its own.
