Two residents of Lata Nna Community in Kwara State have sustained gunshot injuries after suspected bandits opened fire on farmers in Patigi Local Government Area, worsening concerns over growing insecurity in parts of the state.
The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday, June 26, 2026, as the victims were travelling to their farms in the agrarian community. According to eyewitnesses, heavily armed assailants ambushed the farmers and opened fire without warning, leaving two people seriously injured.
Residents said panic quickly spread across the community as news of the shooting emerged, with many farmers abandoning plans to go to their farmlands out of fear of further attacks. The incident has heightened tension in an area already vulnerable due to its strategic location near forest corridors used by criminal gangs.
Lata Nna Community lies along a route linking parts of Kwara State to Kogi State, particularly Yagba West Local Government Area, a corridor spanning roughly 150 to 180 kilometres that security analysts say has increasingly become a movement route for armed bandits and kidnappers operating across the North-Central region.
Efforts to evacuate the injured victims for urgent medical treatment were reportedly hampered by blocked and poor access roads, creating delays in emergency response. As of the latest reports, the exact medical condition of the two victims remains unclear.
The attack has triggered fresh calls from residents for stronger security presence in rural communities, especially farming settlements that have become increasingly exposed to attacks during planting and harvesting seasons.
Community members said repeated security threats have disrupted farming activities, raising fears over food production and livelihoods. Many residents expressed frustration that despite previous warnings about suspicious movements around nearby bushes and routes, attacks have continued.
In response, the Chairman of Patigi Local Government Area reportedly ordered the deployment of security personnel to the affected community to restore calm and prevent further violence. Security patrols were said to have been intensified in surrounding areas following the incident.
The latest shooting adds to growing security concerns in parts of North-Central Nigeria, where banditry, kidnapping and armed attacks have increasingly spread beyond traditional hotspots in the North-West. Criminal groups often target remote communities where security response is slower due to difficult terrain and poor infrastructure.
As investigations continue, residents are urging both state and federal authorities to take urgent steps to secure rural roads, strengthen intelligence gathering and protect farming communities from further attacks.
