The Borno State Police Command has dealt a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating in Nigeria's North-East, intercepting a large consignment of illicit substances concealed in 55 sacks and arresting a suspected trafficker. The operation, carried out by the Command's X-Squad, prevented the illegal drugs from being smuggled across Nigeria's international borders, according to a statement issued by the command's Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

The breakthrough was recorded as part of the command's sustained campaign against drug trafficking and other criminal activities across the state. Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Command's X-Squad intercepted an Isuzu Bedford pick-up vehicle along Baga Road-Bypass, Maiduguri, at about 7:11 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of fifty-five sacks containing numerous 60ml bottles of an illicit substance popularly known as "Gumm." Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment was being transported to Ngamboru Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State, from where it was allegedly intended to be smuggled across international borders, the police said.

During the operation, officers arrested the driver of the vehicle, identified as 51-year-old Babagana Modu. The suspect stated during investigation that he had been contracted to transport the consignment to its intended destination. The command said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the suspected trafficking network who remain at large. "The case remains under active investigation, and further details will be communicated as investigations progress," the police spokesman said.

The Borno State Police Command reiterated its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and tackling other criminal activities across the state. "The Borno State Police Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and other criminal activities across the state. The Command urges members of the public to continue supporting the Police with timely and credible information to preempt crime," the statement added.

Borno State shares international borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republic, making some of its border communities vulnerable to transnational crimes, including arms and drug trafficking, smuggling and the movement of insurgents. Security agencies have in recent years intensified surveillance and intelligence-led operations across the state to disrupt criminal supply chains and prevent illicit substances and other contraband from being moved through the region.

The seizure of the 55 sacks of 'Gumm' is a significant victory in the ongoing fight against drug abuse and trafficking, which has been identified as a major driver of crime and insecurity in the North-East. By intercepting the consignment before it could cross the border, the Borno State Police Command has not only prevented the distribution of harmful substances but also dealt a blow to the financial networks that sustain criminal enterprises in the region. As investigations continue, the police have assured the public that all those involved in the trafficking network will be brought to justice.

The successful operation underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and the importance of community cooperation in combating drug trafficking and other organised crimes. The Borno State Police Command has called on residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements. With the North-East region still grappling with the aftermath of a protracted insurgency, the interception of this drug consignment represents a critical step in restoring peace and security to the area.
