African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has declared that his greatest obstacle to the presidency is not any political rival but what he describes as widespread "political ignorance" among Nigerians, a condition he blames on a failed education system and the superficial influence of social media. Sowore made the remarks during an interview with journalist Bukola Adebayo on The Manifesto programme, sharing an excerpt on his X account on Sunday, June 28, 2026 .
When asked who he considered his greatest opposition in the race for the presidency, Sowore responded with a single word: "Ignorance" . Explaining further, he argued that Nigeria's education system has failed to equip citizens with the critical thinking needed to make informed political decisions. "When I say ignorance, I mean that there is still a lot of political ignorance in Nigeria," he said. "It is driven by a number of factors. The education that Nigerians had up till now has been so bastardised to produce some of the political thoughts that we now have. It produced a population that don't look at things fundamentally deep" .
Sowore rejected the notion that money remains the primary determinant of electoral choices in Nigeria, arguing that the country's worsening conditions have shifted public priorities. "Anybody could sit here and tell you it is money, but I think Nigeria has gotten to a point where money is not everything to them anymore because their lives almost depend on a different kind of politics now," he said . However, he maintained that many Nigerians still struggle to make informed political choices because of poverty, inadequate education, and limited exposure. "But largely there is a lot of ignorance about how to make that choice and stand with it in the face of vagaries of life, of which poverty is one of it, the half-baked education that we get is part of it, exposure is part of it," Sowore said .
The AAC presidential candidate also took aim at social media, arguing that it has contributed to what he described as superficial political understanding among many citizens. "There is another factor that I'd bring in here that might be controversial; it is the half-education that the social media brings to bear on the society, which makes an average person who doesn't know much to be very loud and also gets the kind of attention that, in a society where there is a little bit higher in terms of educational awareness, some of those ideas may not be dominant," he said .
Sowore, who recently spent time in Kuje prison over a cybercrime case brought against him by the Department of State Services, has consistently advocated what he describes as a revolutionary transformation of Nigeria's political system. His latest comments come as the 2027 election cycle gathers momentum, with the AAC candidate positioning himself as an alternative to the established political class. The yet-to-be-aired interview was recorded before his detention in Kuje, according to Sowore, who shared a clip on X with the caption: "In a yet-to-be-published interview on the manifesto, hosted by Bukola Adebayo and recorded before my detention in Kuje prison, I was asked who my biggest opponent was. My answer was simple: ignorance!" .
