Tragedy struck the Gusau–Gummi highway in Zamfara State on Sunday, June 28, 2026, when suspected bandits abducted a commercial driver, Alu Bahari, and the passengers he was transporting. The attack occurred in the afternoon, according to initial reports.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on travellers along the Gusau–Gummi corridor. The route has become increasingly dangerous, with bandits frequently blocking roads and abducting commuters. On June 11, 2026, operatives of the Zamfara State Police Command rescued six kidnapped victims following a gun battle with bandits along the Anka–Gurusu Road, a nearby corridor that has also witnessed repeated attacks. In another operation on June 14, police rescued three additional victims along the Gurusu–Anka Road.
The Nigerian Army has also been active in the region, rescuing eight kidnap victims in separate operations in Zamfara. Troops of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Kaura Namoda in Zamfara rescued two abducted victims after engaging terrorists attacking commuters along the Sabon Gari-Gusau road, forcing the assailants to flee into nearby bushes.
The abduction of Alu Bahari and his passengers adds to the growing toll of insecurity in Zamfara State, where bandits continue to operate with impunity. As of the time of this report, security authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident.
For the families of the victims, the wait for news continues. As one resident lamented, “It is heartbreaking that for so many Nigerians, getting on the road has become an act of courage rather than a routine part of daily life. No one should have to wonder whether a journey to visit family, work or return home will end in tragedy.”
