The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the successful restoration of the TR1 60MVA transformer at the Oworonshoki Transmission Substation, which had been knocked out of service by heavy flooding at the station. The repair was completed at exactly 7:53 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, according to a statement issued by the company.
TCN confirmed that power supply has now been restored to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) for onward distribution to customers within the affected areas. All feeders radiating from the Oworonshoki substation are now back in service, bringing relief to residents and businesses who had endured days of blackout following the flood-induced outage.
The Oworonshoki substation, a critical node in Lagos's power transmission network, had been submerged by heavy rainfall that caused severe flooding in the area. The 60MVA transformer, which serves as a vital link in the transmission chain, was taken out of service as a precautionary measure to prevent further damage. TCN's maintenance crew worked swiftly to pump out water, dry the equipment, and carry out necessary repairs before successfully restoring the transformer to service.
TCN assured the public of its continued commitment to maintaining a reliable and stable transmission network across the country. The company also expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding of electricity consumers affected by the outage and regretted the inconvenience caused.
The restoration of the Oworonshoki transformer comes amid growing concerns over the impact of flooding on critical infrastructure, particularly as Nigeria enters the peak of the rainy season. With the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) having predicted above-normal rainfall and severe flooding in some parts of the country this year, TCN has been urged to strengthen flood protection measures at its substations and transmission facilities to prevent similar disruptions.
For residents and businesses in the affected areas, the return of power supply brings some relief after days of uncertainty. As the rainy season continues, the focus will now shift to ensuring that other critical infrastructure remains protected from the elements.
