The quiet community of Hholoshini in Eswatini's Hhohho Region has been thrown into mourning and disbelief after three brothers were arrested and charged with the brutal murder of their mother's boyfriend, a case that has exposed the dark undercurrents of family secrets, jealousy, and vigilante justice.
Mlondi Mbuli, 25; Sakhelwe Mbuli, 18; and Lindani Mdziniso, 23, appeared before the Mbabane Magistrates Court on murder charges following the fatal assault of Njabulo Ngwenya on June 28, 2026. According to police reports, the brothers allegedly attacked Ngwenya with bricks, stones, sticks, and their bare hands, inflicting severe injuries all over his body. The assault, which occurred at Hholoshini, was reportedly motivated by the brothers' belief that Ngwenya was having an affair with their biological mother.
The incident came to light when Sibongile Motsa, a resident of Hholoshini, reported to police that she had found her son, Njabulo Ngwenya, lying dead inside her sister's house around 1 a.m. on June 28, 2026. The discovery of the lifeless body with multiple injuries prompted an immediate police investigation, which quickly led to the arrest of the three brothers. Principal Magistrate Sfiso Vilakati presided over the initial appearance of the accused, who were formally charged with murder. The court has since remanded them in custody until July 10, 2026, when the matter is expected to be transferred to the High Court for further proceedings.
According to court documents, the attack was allegedly motivated by the brothers accusing Ngwenya of having an affair with their biological mother. While the mother has not been named as a suspect in the case, the allegation has added a layer of intrigue and tragedy to the incident, suggesting a family torn apart by suspicion and ultimately violence. The case has drawn significant local attention, with reports circulating widely on Eswatini media outlets. Authorities have not issued additional statements beyond the court proceedings.
The case is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Eswatini, a small kingdom that has been grappling with a surge in gender-based violence and homicides. According to police statistics, the country recorded 1,994 gender-based violence cases and 22 related deaths in the first three months of 2026 alone, with many victims killed by people they trusted. The incident also comes amid broader concerns about the rule of law in the kingdom, where incidents of vigilante justice and extrajudicial killings have occasionally been reported.
The case of the three brothers is a stark reminder of how quickly family disputes can spiral into tragedy, and how the failure to resolve conflicts peacefully can have devastating consequences. As the community of Hholoshini grapples with the loss of a young man and the arrest of three of its residents, the question on many lips is: what drove these brothers to such extreme violence, and could this tragedy have been prevented? For now, the courts will decide the fate of the three men, while the family of Njabulo Ngwenya continues to grieve.
