Osogbo, Osun State – July 4, 2026 – The Nigerian Army has called on the management of the University of Osun (UNIOSUN) and individuals alleging that soldiers raped female students during a recent raid on the institution's hostels to provide credible evidence, saying no formal complaint or medical report has so far been submitted to support the claims.
The Army Depot in Osogbo made the appeal in a statement issued on Friday, July 3, 2026, by its Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Yahaya, following allegations that military personnel sexually assaulted female students during a hostel invasion that occurred on Monday, June 29, 2026.
The incident has generated widespread public outrage after military operatives reportedly stormed several off-campus hostels occupied by UNIOSUN students during a late-night operation, allegedly assaulting students and destroying property.
Following the raid, Professor Clement Adeboye, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Osun, visited the affected hostels and described the incident as a "harrowing experience." He assured students that the institution would pursue justice and work with relevant authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the operation.
The university's spokesperson, Ademola Adesoji, alleged that some female students were sexually molested during the operation, while male students were physically assaulted. He also claimed that more than 60 mobile phones were taken away by the soldiers during the raid.
According to the university, the incident was immediately reported to military authorities, while it was disclosed that five soldiers had already been placed in detention pending investigations into their alleged involvement.
The Nigerian Army had earlier acknowledged that the operation took place and announced the constitution of a Board of Inquiry to investigate allegations of misconduct by its personnel.
However, in its latest statement, the Army said it had taken note of widespread reports and discussions on social media alleging that soldiers raped female students but maintained that no formal complaint, medical report or other credible evidence had been received from the university, alleged victims or witnesses.
The Army said that, in the absence of such evidence, the rape allegations remain unconfirmed and warned against the circulation of information that could mislead the public or undermine the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Military authorities appealed directly to the university management, affected students and any potential witnesses to cooperate with the Board of Inquiry by submitting any available evidence capable of assisting investigators in determining the facts of the case.
The statement assured alleged victims that any information submitted would be treated confidentially and that their identities and safety would be protected in accordance with military procedures and the law.
The Army stressed that presenting credible evidence remained the most effective way to identify any personnel found to have committed criminal acts and ensure they are prosecuted in accordance with Nigerian law.
It also urged the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), members of the university community and the general public to refrain from spreading unverified claims while investigations remain ongoing.
The controversy has renewed concerns over the conduct of security personnel during operations involving civilians, particularly within educational institutions, where students and rights groups have repeatedly demanded greater accountability for alleged abuses.
Human rights organisations have consistently argued that allegations of sexual violence and excessive use of force must be investigated promptly, independently and transparently to ensure justice for victims while protecting the rights of those accused.
As investigations continue, the Board of Inquiry is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the hostel raid and establish whether any military personnel breached operational procedures or committed criminal offences. The outcome of the investigation is likely to shape further disciplinary or legal action against those found responsible.
