Osogbo, Osun State – July 4, 2026 – The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has warned that perpetrators of political violence in Osun State will no longer be treated with leniency, as security agencies intensify preparations ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Disu issued the warning on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Osun State Police Command Headquarters in Osogbo, where he met with representatives of political parties, election stakeholders and security officials as part of broader consultations aimed at ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
He expressed concern over what he described as a rising trend of political violence in Osun State in recent times, noting that such incidents posed a serious threat to democratic participation and public safety.
The Inspector-General said the Nigeria Police Force would adopt a firmer approach in dealing with individuals and groups found to be involved in acts of violence before, during or after the election.
He stressed that security agencies had received intelligence reports indicating heightened political tensions in some parts of the state, adding that proactive measures were being put in place to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
Disu assured stakeholders that the police would remain neutral and professional throughout the electoral process, but warned that anyone attempting to disrupt the peace would face decisive action in line with the law.
He urged political actors and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and avoid actions capable of inciting violence or undermining public confidence in the electoral system.
The Inspector-General also called on political parties to sensitise their members and supporters on the importance of peaceful participation, warning that the police would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute offenders regardless of their political affiliation.
According to him, credible elections can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace, order and respect for democratic rules, adding that security agencies were fully prepared to deploy personnel strategically across the state to prevent electoral misconduct.
Disu further appealed to community leaders, youth groups and civil society organisations to support ongoing efforts to maintain peace, emphasising that collaboration between stakeholders was essential to preventing electoral violence.
The warning comes amid heightened political activity in Osun State as parties prepare for the governorship election, with security agencies stepping up surveillance and intelligence gathering to identify and neutralise potential threats.
In recent months, Osun State has witnessed pockets of political tension and clashes between supporters of rival parties, prompting increased concern among residents and observers about the potential for violence during the election period.
Security analysts say early engagement with stakeholders, combined with firm enforcement of electoral laws, remains critical to ensuring a peaceful and credible poll.
Authorities have assured residents that adequate security arrangements are being put in place, while urging the public to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
