The Anambra State Police Command has offered a detailed explanation for the ongoing impoundment of vehicles with tinted windows across the state, clarifying that the enforcement exercise targets all such vehicles regardless of whether the owners present valid tinted glass permits. In a statement issued on Sunday, 5 July 2026, the command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the operation is part of a broader security-driven initiative aimed at addressing rising insecurity and preventing criminals from exploiting tinted vehicles to evade identification and perpetrate crimes. The exercise, which has affected vehicles with and without tinted glass permits, has generated significant concern among motorists, slowing vehicular movement and prompting questions from law-abiding residents who believe they have complied with all legal requirements.

Ikenga explained that the exercise is intended to verify the authenticity of tinted glass permits, identify forged or fraudulently obtained permits, and ensure due process in their issuance. "The Anambra State Police Command wishes to clarify that the ongoing impounding of vehicles with tinted glasses, whether or not the owners present tinted glass permits, as well as unregistered vehicles and vehicles with concealed, covered, or defaced number plates, is part of a security-driven enforcement exercise," the statement read in part. The police spokesman emphasised that the operation also targets unregistered vehicles and those with concealed, covered or defaced number plates, as criminals often exploit such violations to evade identification and frustrate law enforcement efforts.

The decision to impound vehicles even when drivers present what appear to be valid permits has raised eyebrows among motorists, many of whom have questioned why their vehicles are being seized despite having obtained the required documentation. However, the police command insists that the presence of a permit alone is not sufficient grounds for exemption from the exercise, as the operation is designed to verify the authenticity of such permits and identify those that may have been forged or fraudulently obtained. "The exercise is aimed at verifying the authenticity of tinted glass permits, identifying forged or fraudulently obtained permits, ensuring due process, enforcing compliance with vehicle registration and number plate regulations, and preventing criminal elements from exploiting such violations to evade identification and perpetrate crime," Ikenga stated.

While acknowledging the inconvenience the exercise may cause to law-abiding residents, the police spokesman appealed for understanding, patience, and continued cooperation. "While the Command regrets the inconvenience this may cause to law-abiding residents, the exercise has become necessary in view of prevailing security concerns and the increasing use of such vehicles by criminals to conceal their identities and frustrate law enforcement efforts," the statement added. Ikenga assured the public that the exercise is conducted in the interest of safeguarding lives, protecting property, and enhancing public safety across the state, urging Ndi Anambra to see the operation as a necessary measure rather than an undue burden.

The enforcement drive comes amid growing security challenges in Anambra State, where criminal elements have increasingly exploited tinted vehicles to carry out kidnappings, armed robberies, and other violent crimes while evading detection. The police command has noted that unauthorised or fraudulently obtained tinted glass permits have become a tool for criminals to conceal their identities and move freely across the state without being identified. By subjecting all tinted vehicles to verification, the command hopes to close this loophole and restore public confidence in the state's security architecture. The operation also serves as a deterrent to those who may have obtained permits through irregular means, as the verification process is expected to expose fraudulent documentation and hold those responsible accountable.

The police command has called on residents to promptly report suspicious persons or activities through the nearest police station or established emergency channels. As the enforcement continues, motorists across Anambra are advised to ensure their tinted glass permits are authentic and properly obtained, and to cooperate with security operatives during routine checks. The command has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, and has assured the public that the exercise will be conducted professionally and with due regard for the rights of law-abiding citizens. For now, however, the message from the Anambra State Police Command is clear: no vehicle with tinted windows is exempt, and the verification exercise will continue until the command is satisfied that all permits in circulation are genuine and that criminals can no longer hide behind tinted glass to evade justice.
