A wave of grief has swept through the Bayan Dutse Narayi community in Kaduna South Local Government Area following the tragic deaths of a woman and her firstborn son, Joshua, who were both killed by suspected bandits in a harrowing ordeal that has renewed concerns over the escalating kidnapping crisis in northern Nigeria. The woman, whose identity has not been officially released, was abducted in December 2025 from her home in Bayan Dutse Narayi. Her captors demanded a ransom far beyond what her family and members of the community could afford, leaving relatives scrambling for months to secure her release.
According to a Facebook post shared on Saturday, 4 July 2026, by a community member identified as Noble, the family was unable to raise the required amount within the deadline set by the kidnappers. In a desperate attempt to secure his mother's freedom, Joshua courageously volunteered to deliver the funds the family had managed to gather and negotiate her release. However, upon arriving at the kidnappers' hideout, he discovered that his mother had already died while in captivity. The ordeal did not end there. After collecting the ransom, the kidnappers allegedly seized Joshua, held him captive, and later tortured him to death.
The double tragedy has left the family shattered, with Joshua reportedly leaving behind a wife and children. Describing the victims, Noble said the deceased woman was widely known in her community as a kind, cheerful, and compassionate individual whose presence brought joy and comfort to those around her. "Her sudden abduction in December last year came as a devastating shock to her family, friends, and neighbours," Noble wrote. He added: "The family endured additional anguish as they received distressing communications regarding his condition. Sadly, he also lost his life, leaving behind a grieving family, including his wife and children".
The heartbreaking incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for urgent action to address the worsening insecurity in Kaduna State. Community leaders and concerned citizens have called on security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks responsible for kidnappings across the state. Appeals have also been directed to Governor Uba Sani and the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces, urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and strengthen measures to protect vulnerable communities.
"This cannot be normalised," Noble said. "Families should not have to endure this level of pain and loss. Those responsible must be found and held accountable". The incident adds to a growing list of kidnapping-related tragedies that have plagued communities in Kaduna and other parts of the North-West, where residents continue to face threats from armed criminal groups despite ongoing security operations. As of the time of this report, security authorities had not issued an official statement on the alleged killings. For the bereaved family and their community, however, the loss of both mother and son remains a painful reminder of the devastating toll insecurity continues to exact on ordinary Nigerians.
