Troops of the 8 Division Garrison have arrested four suspected criminals found conveying metal materials believed to be intended for the production of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, in a major operation aimed at choking off supplies to armed groups operating in the North-West. Security sources told counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama that the suspects were apprehended at about 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, 4 July 2026, by troops deployed at Shanawa during a security operation. According to the sources, the four suspects were intercepted while transporting metal bed frames and metal plates allegedly looted from Bafarawa community.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the recovered metal materials are commonly used as components in the fabrication of improvised explosive devices. The suspects and the recovered items are currently in military custody for further investigation and possible prosecution. Military sources said the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt terrorist logistics and prevent the movement of materials that could be used to manufacture explosive devices in the North-West. Although investigations are still ongoing, security authorities are working to determine the intended destination of the recovered materials and whether the suspects have links to terrorist cells or other criminal networks operating in the region.
Military sources described the seizure as another significant breakthrough in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts, noting that disrupting the supply chain of materials used for explosive devices has become a strategic priority as terrorists increasingly rely on locally fabricated IEDs to target troops, security convoys and civilian communities. The sources noted that preventing the movement of such materials has become a key aspect of ongoing counterterrorism operations, as insurgent and bandit groups increasingly rely on locally fabricated IEDs to target troops, security convoys and communities. Authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged looting of the metal items from Bafarawa community and whether additional persons were involved in transporting or procuring the materials.
The arrest comes amid intensified military operations across the North-West, where troops have been conducting sustained offensives to dismantle terrorist networks and deny criminal elements freedom of action. In recent weeks, the Nigerian Army has recorded significant successes across the region, including the arrest of suspected logistics suppliers, the recovery of weapons and ammunition, and the rescue of kidnapped victims. The military has also intensified offensive operations to track down fleeing terrorists and recover any missing weapons. The operation in Isa Local Government Area is part of broader efforts to cut off supply chains that enable terrorist groups to manufacture locally assembled explosive devices used in attacks against security personnel and civilians.
The four suspects are currently being held in military custody alongside the recovered exhibits pending the conclusion of investigations. If investigations establish criminal culpability, the suspects are expected to face prosecution in accordance with the law. Efforts to obtain comments from the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Colonel Appolonia Anele, proved abortive as she had not responded to calls and text messages seeking her reaction as of the time of filing this report.
The incident underscores the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups operating in the North-West, who have increasingly turned to locally fabricated IEDs to carry out attacks on military and civilian targets. Just weeks before this arrest, four Nigerian soldiers were killed in Sokoto State after a military vehicle struck an explosive device believed to have been planted by armed bandits along the Bargaja road in Isa Local Government Area. In early July, two soldiers were killed and three others injured after terrorists ambushed troops of the Nigerian Army's 8 Division in Isa Local Government Area. The military has since intensified operations to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.
The arrests in Isa Local Government Area represent a significant blow to terrorist logistics networks in the North-West. By intercepting materials commonly used in the fabrication of IEDs, troops have disrupted a critical supply chain that enables armed groups to carry out attacks against security forces and civilian communities. The operation also highlights the importance of intelligence-led operations in identifying and disrupting terrorist networks before they can carry out attacks. As investigations continue, security authorities are working to determine the full extent of the suspects' involvement in terrorist activities and whether they are linked to broader criminal networks operating across the region. The Nigerian military has reiterated its commitment to sustaining the momentum of operations against all forms of criminality in the North-West, vowing to continue denying terrorists and bandits the space to operate.
