A tragic road accident along the Ogbomoso-Oko Olowo corridor of the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway in Kwara State has claimed the lives of 15 persons, all males, while 17 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the early hours of Monday, 6 July 2026. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kwara Sector Command, confirmed that the lone crash occurred at about 2:32 a.m. near the Muslim Cemetery in the Oko-Olowo area, involving a DAF XF trailer with registration number GWL 274 XC. The vehicle, driven by one Nasiru Muhammed, was reportedly conveying 48 male passengers at the time of the incident.
According to the FRSC sector commander, Kabiru Babatunde Kazeem, the trailer, which was carrying heavy loads with passengers seated on top of the goods, suddenly veered off the main road. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver lost control after falling asleep at the wheel, causing the long truck to detach from its head and overturn. The heavy load then fell on the passengers, leading to the high casualty figure. Of the 48 male occupants involved in the crash, 15 died on the spot, 17 sustained injuries ranging from fractures, dislocations, and bruises, while 16 others escaped unhurt.
The FRSC sector commander attributed the fatal crash to driver fatigue, a recurring cause of road accidents on Nigerian highways. He noted that the injured victims had been rushed to Arewa Medical Centre and Baki Hospital for urgent medical attention. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families through the Sarkin Hausawa of Oko-Olowo in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State. Kazeem also disclosed that search and rescue operations were still ongoing at the scene to locate more victims who might have been trapped beneath the trailer's load. The rescue operation was jointly carried out by personnel of the RS8.15 Oloru Unit Command and the RS8.1 Kwara Command (Oko-Olowo Outpost).
In response to the tragedy, the FRSC sector commander said the command would intensify public enlightenment campaigns through town hall meetings with relevant stakeholders. He also advised motorists to avoid mixed loading—the dangerous practice of carrying passengers alongside goods—and to refrain from night travel, stressing that fatigue remains one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes. The Kwara State Government has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but the FRSC has assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies.
The crash has once again brought to the fore the perennial issue of road safety in Nigeria, where poorly maintained vehicles, driver fatigue, and overloading continue to claim thousands of lives annually. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, road accidents remain one of the leading causes of death in the country, with the FRSC recording thousands of fatalities each year. The Ilorin-Jebba Expressway, a major artery connecting the South-West to the North-Central and Northern regions, has been the scene of several fatal accidents in recent years, prompting calls for improved road infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
As families of the deceased begin the painful process of burying their loved ones, the Kwara State community is left to grapple with yet another preventable tragedy on the nation's highways. The FRSC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all necessary measures are taken to improve road safety and protect the lives of all road users. The sector commander's warning against mixed loading and night travel serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that continue to lurk on Nigerian roads, and a call to action for both motorists and regulators to prioritise safety above all else. As the search for remaining victims continues, the nation mourns the loss of 15 young men whose lives were cut short in a moment of driver fatigue and negligence.
