Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has approved the immediate suspension of five senior officials of the Zamfara State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (ZAMCHEMA) over allegations of financial misconduct and insubordination, directing the State Auditor-General to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations. The suspension, announced on Monday, 6 July 2026, by the Head of Service, Dr Shehu Usman Hassan, marks the latest in a series of disciplinary actions taken by the Lawal administration against public officials accused of undermining the state's financial and administrative integrity.

The affected officials are the Director of Finance, Mannir Sani; Director of Administration, Hauwa'u Tanimu; Deputy Director of Finance, Nafiu Sulaiman; Accountant, Yunusa Muhammad; and Hambali Isah. According to the statement, the suspension is a prelude to a full-scale investigation into the agency's financial operations, with the State Auditor-General mandated to examine the allegations and submit a comprehensive report.

The Zamfara State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency was established to reduce out-of-pocket health expenditure and improve access to quality healthcare for residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as children under five, pregnant women, orphans, persons with disabilities, and the elderly. The agency has been a cornerstone of the state's healthcare financing strategy, with local government councils recently committing over N1 billion to the scheme as capitation fees for free healthcare services for poor individuals across the 147 political wards of the state. The suspension of five senior officials from an agency that manages such critical public funds has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the state's healthcare financing system.

The governor's directive for the Auditor-General to investigate the allegations underscores the administration's commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law, particularly in the treatment of civil servants. Governor Lawal has previously taken decisive action against financial irregularities in the state, including ordering the suspension of all non-statutory deductions from civil servants' salaries in November 2024 following numerous complaints about illegal surcharges and unauthorised deductions. The suspension of the five ZAMCHEMA officials is consistent with the governor's broader anti-corruption stance, which has seen him refuse to negotiate with bandits and sustain military operations against criminal elements across the state.

In a related development, the governor approved the appointment of Ibrahim Sani as Special Assistant on Sign Language Interpretation, a move aimed at improving communication between the government and persons with hearing impairment. According to the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, the appointment is in line with the provisions of the Zamfara State Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Law. Sani is a certified sign language interpreter, a trained special education teacher, and previously served as Vice Principal (Academics) at the School for Special Education, Gusau, and currently serves as the North-West Zonal Coordinator of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria (ASLIN).

The suspension of the ZAMCHEMA officials has generated significant interest among civil society organisations and healthcare stakeholders, who have called for a transparent investigation to ensure that those found culpable are held accountable. The state government has assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and that any official found to have violated the law will face appropriate sanctions. As the Auditor-General begins the probe, the people of Zamfara State await the outcome, hoping that the investigation will restore confidence in the management of public funds and ensure that the state's healthcare financing scheme continues to serve its intended purpose of providing quality healthcare to the most vulnerable members of society.
