Armed bandits raided the Nassarawa Burkullu community near Bakin Gari in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State on the evening of Monday, 6 July 2026, abducting several residents in an attack that has plunged the community into fear and despair, according to multiple local sources. The assailants, who were heavily armed, stormed the village under the cover of darkness, shooting sporadically and moving from house to house in search of victims. Families were thrown into chaos as residents scrambled to escape the onslaught, with many fleeing into the surrounding bushes while others were caught and forced into the waiting arms of their abductors. The exact number of those abducted remains unclear as of the time of filing this report, with relatives anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones and making desperate appeals to security agencies for urgent intervention.

The attack on Nassarawa Burkullu is the latest in a series of violent raids that have plagued Bukkuyum Local Government Area, one of the worst-hit districts in Zamfara State by banditry. In a previous incident, 60 residents were killed across four villages in Bukkuyum and Anka LGAs, with some of the affected communities being Kurfa Danya, Kurfa Magaji, Rafin Gero, Tungar Isa and Barayar Zaki. During that attack, the assailants, who arrived in large numbers on motorcycles, shot sporadically and razed several houses and food stores, forcing residents, mostly women and children, to scramble for safety. Some of those who fled that attack sustained injuries and sought refuge at the Nassarawa Burkullu community, which was itself targeted in Monday's assault.

The area has witnessed a disturbing pattern of violence in recent months. In April 2026, police confirmed a "mass" abduction in raids that occurred in Bukkuyum LGA, with residents telling AFP that dozens of motorcycle-riding bandits had raided neighbouring villages, shooting and abducting residents. Three different locals told AFP that around 150 people had been kidnapped in those attacks. District lawmaker Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi confirmed the attacks, accusing the central government of focusing on fighting jihadists in the northeast while "banditry festers in Zamfara". The bandit violence, which started as clashes between herders and farmers over limited water and land resources, has morphed into organised cattle rustling and kidnapping-for-ransom syndicates.

The attack on Monday evening comes just days after troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, repelled a terrorist attack at Dauran in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, forcing the terrorists to retreat and recovering weapons and ammunition. The Joint Task Force has maintained sustained offensive operations against terrorist groups in the North-West, working closely with communities to enhance security. However, the persistence of attacks in Bukkuyum underscores the difficulty of containing banditry in the region, where armed groups have embedded themselves in vast forests and maintain a lucrative kidnap-for-ransom economy.

The bandits in Zamfara have become increasingly brazen, routinely abducting villagers and travellers for ransom and extorting farming communities. In one recent incident, bandits issued an evacuation ultimatum to a community in Zurmi LGA, triggering mass displacement. According to the International Organization for Migration, armed bandit attacks in Kanwa ward of Zurmi LGA in February 2026 displaced a total of 2,710 individuals from 520 households, including 1,516 children, 682 women, and 512 men. In a separate attack on Dauran town in Zurmi LGA on 2 July 2026, bandits set fire to the home of a prominent community elder and kidnapped several locals.

The attack on Nassarawa Burkullu has drawn attention to the vulnerability of rural communities in Zamfara State, where farmers and villagers have become constant targets of armed gangs. Despite repeated promises by the federal and state governments to curb the crisis, the violence persists. Last year, Nigeria entered into a military cooperation agreement with the United States following a diplomatic row in which US officials asserted that a "Christian genocide" was taking place in the country. However, analysts said the accusation simplifies a complicated situation in which people are often targeted regardless of their faith.

Community leaders in Bukkuyum have repeatedly called for increased security deployment and more proactive measures to protect civilians. The Chairman of Bukkuyum Local Government Area had earlier revealed that 1,065 people have been killed in the area since 2015, while about N2.9 billion has been paid to bandits. He said all 17 districts under Bukkuyum have suffered repeated attacks by armed bandits, forcing locals to pay ransom for daily survival. As the search for the abducted residents continues, families in Nassarawa Burkullu are left to grapple with the agony of uncertainty, wondering whether their loved ones will ever return.

The attack is a stark reminder that despite military offensives and political promises, banditry continues to ravage communities across Zamfara State, with no end in sight. For the people of Nassarawa Burkullu, the question remains: how many more rural communities must live under the constant threat of abduction before lasting security becomes a reality?
