A devastating scene unfolded at a hospital in Ogun State after a mother who had expected to deliver twins was presented with only one baby, sparking a viral confrontation and a police investigation into what she alleges is a conspiracy involving the hospital and her husband's family to conceal the whereabouts of her missing child. The woman, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was filmed in a viral video screaming at medical staff, demanding: "Produce my second baby. This is not good enough. I did not come to this hospital to be robbed of my baby." The footage, which circulated widely on social media on Monday, 6 July 2026, showed the distraught mother holding her newborn while accusing the hospital of baby trafficking and withholding her twin.
According to multiple reports, the woman had undergone an obstetric scan during her pregnancy which confirmed she was carrying twins. The scan report, dated March 2026, indicated a twin pregnancy with two foetuses observed, stating: "Twin visible. Twin 1 is an oblique cephalic while Twin 2 is a transverse presentation. Normal cardiac pulsations noted." The report further indicated that Twin 1 was male (XY) while Twin 2 was female (XX). However, when the woman delivered at the hospital, she was reportedly told she had given birth to only one baby. The hospital's medical director, Sunday Babajide, has dismissed the allegations, insisting that only one baby was delivered and that the scan result was inaccurate.
"The scan was wrong, and she did not do another scan in another centre. It was an error; the scan said two instead of one," Babajide was quoted as saying. He maintained that the husband was present during the delivery and witnessed the birth of only one child, adding that the mother was conscious throughout the procedure. "We invited the husband to the theatre… the husband witnessed that it was one. The woman herself was not asleep; she was awake," he stated. The hospital director also claimed that the family was informed immediately after birth. Corroborating his claim on the scan, Babajide asserted: "If the scan was done at the early stage… it will clearly show it. But if the scan was done at a later period, an error can occur," noting that the scan was done at about 20 weeks. "The mistake we made was that we should have insisted on her doing another scan elsewhere to be doubly sure," he added.
The mother, however, insists that the hospital and her husband's family are complicit in covering up the whereabouts of her missing twin. She has alleged that her husband's family, who were present at the hospital, are aware of what happened to her second child and are refusing to speak out. In the viral video, she was heard demanding that hospital staff be arrested over allegations of baby trafficking. The video also showed individuals who accompanied her demanding the arrest of hospital staff. The state police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the Command is aware of the trending video and has commenced an investigation into the matter.
"The Command is aware of the trending video and wishes to inform the public that the matter is currently under investigation. Relevant professional bodies and associations have been contacted and are working in synergy with the Police to get to the root of the situation," the police spokesperson said. The police added that the Area Commander, Area M, is personally overseeing the case, assuring that findings will be made public. "The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course," the statement added. The Command also urged residents to remain calm, noting that the situation is under control. "Members of the public are hereby urged to remain calm, as the situation is under control," the statement said.
The case has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over child trafficking and the safety of newborns in Nigerian hospitals. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to express their outrage and demand justice for the mother, while others have called for a thorough investigation into the hospital's practices. The woman's allegation that her husband's family is involved has also raised questions about family complicity in such cases, a phenomenon that has been reported in previous incidents of missing or stolen babies. The police investigation is expected to determine whether the hospital staff or any other individuals were involved in the disappearance of the twin. As the investigation continues, the mother and her family are left waiting for answers, hoping that the truth will finally come to light and that her missing child will be found.
