The Delta State Police Command has reduced the ranks of two officers found guilty of extortion after they were captured in a viral video receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside the police station in Asaba. The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of the orderly room trial and approved the punishment of Inspector Augustine Jeremiah, who was reduced to Sergeant, and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, who was reduced to Constable.
The incident occurred on 13 January 2026 at the 'C' Division, Asaba, when the officers were recorded accepting payment from a motorist via POS. Their conduct was found to violate the provisions of the Police Act, 2020, on three counts: Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion, and Discreditable Conduct. The Commissioner of Police upheld the punishment and reaffirmed the Inspector-General of Police's zero-tolerance policy on extortion and professional misconduct. He stressed that IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu unequivocally prohibits the use of POS terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations, warning that no officer is authorised to demand or receive money from the public under any guise.
The Commissioner urged officers and men of the command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect for citizens' rights. He noted that the disciplinary action should serve as a deterrent and reaffirmed the command's commitment to discipline, accountability, and public trust. He also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit on 09155570008 and 09011112311.
The action follows recent directives by the Inspector-General of Police, who had earlier in 2026 banned the use of POS machines in police stations nationwide as part of efforts to curb extortion and improve public trust. In May 2026, the IGP ordered an investigation into allegations of extortion involving some officers in Ogun and Lagos States. The Delta State Police Command's swift disciplinary action sends a clear message that misconduct will not be tolerated and that officers who engage in extortion or other unprofessional conduct will face the full weight of the law.
