Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has resigned as the Member of Parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, forcing a by-election that he has vowed to contest as a battle between "the people and the establishment." The dramatic move, announced on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, comes under mounting scrutiny over his personal finances, including allegations that he failed to declare substantial donations and benefits received before entering Parliament.

In a televised statement, Farage declared: "I've decided today I will resign as a Member of Parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, thereby forcing a by-election, which will happen, I hope, in short order". He insisted he had done nothing wrong and accused the media and political establishment of orchestrating a campaign against him. "I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way at all. I have not misused public money," he said. The Reform UK leader framed the upcoming contest as a direct appeal to voters: "I've decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions".

The resignation follows weeks of intense pressure over Farage's financial affairs. The parliamentary commissioner for standards is investigating a £5 million gift he received from Thailand-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne in early 2024, which he did not register. Under Commons rules, new MPs must register gifts worth more than £300 received in the previous 12 months. The Sunday Times also reported that long-time ally George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster, had provided undeclared funding for security and staffing before the election.

Labour and the Liberal Democrats have called for investigations, with TUC general secretary Paul Nowak dismissing Farage's resignation as "a cynical political stunt to distract from his dodgy dealings with crypto crooks and super rich aristocrats". Farage hit back, accusing the media of harassment and threatening his family's safety, singling out The Times for publishing a picture of where his daughter lives and Sky News for allegedly harassing his family.

Farage's decision to resign and seek re-election is a bold gamble. If he wins, parliamentary investigations will resume. If he loses, his political career could be over. The Clacton constituency, which he won in 2024, has since become a Reform UK stronghold. The by-election date has not been set, but Farage has made clear he will stand again, declaring: "I will fight to win. I will fight to continue the political revolution that Reform has started".

For Farage, the gamble is clear: let the voters of Clacton decide his fate, and hope they choose him over the establishment he so passionately despises.
