Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has once again ignited a fierce debate on social media after he suggested that there is some truth to the popular phrase "school na scam," arguing that academic qualifications do not always guarantee financial success and that he is personally doing better than all his former lecturers. The actor's comments, made during a recent interview that began trending on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, have drawn both sharp criticism and enthusiastic support from Nigerians weighing in on the value of formal education in today's economy.

Speaking candidly, Iyke used his personal experience to support his controversial stance. "There's some truth to 'school na scam'. I'm doing better than all my lecturers. I met one of my professors months ago. I was in business class while he was in economy. Most wealthy men in this country didn't even go to school," the actor declared. His remarks, which were widely shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the popular blog YabaLeftOnline, quickly sparked a wave of mixed reactions online.

While some social media users agreed with the actor, pointing out that several successful entrepreneurs and business moguls built their fortunes outside the traditional educational system, others argued that education remains a vital tool for personal development and long-term success. One user, @Letbud Rental, cautioned against the influence of such statements on young people, writing: "This is why there is an 'olodo uprising' over the 'school na scam' everyone is saying online. These little kids listen to us. How do you expect them to react when they see a rich person saying 'school nah scam'?". Another user, @HeWhoRemains, offered a nuanced take: "Being educated is not the same thing as having a degree. School na scam na for who dey pursue degree without actually being educated".

The actor's comments have once again fuelled conversations around whether academic degrees are still the most reliable pathway to prosperity in today's world. Although his statement has been viewed as controversial by some, supporters insist that he was merely highlighting the reality that wealth can be achieved through different routes beyond the classroom.

Iyke's educational background is itself a point of interest in this debate. He completed his secondary school education at Federal Government College, Kwali, Abuja, from 1985 to 1991. He later studied at the University of Jos, Plateau State, where he obtained a diploma in Banking and Finance and a Bachelor of Science degree in Philosophy. Despite his academic credentials, he has consistently challenged the notion that formal education is the sole determinant of success.

This is not the first time the actor has made provocative statements about established institutions. In August 2025, he claimed that medical doctors are trained not to heal patients, insinuating that it is more profitable for them to keep patients perpetually visiting the hospital.

As the debate continues to rage across Nigerian social media, Iyke's comments have once again placed the value of formal education under the spotlight, forcing many to question whether the traditional path of schooling is still the best route to financial prosperity in an ever-changing world. For the actor, the answer is clear: wealth and success are not confined to the four walls of a classroom, and he has the bank account to prove it.
