The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the dismissal of four senior police officers and demoted 10 others following their conviction for gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct, and acts unbecoming of public officers, in a major disciplinary action aimed at restoring professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force. The Commission also imposed various sanctions on 31 other officers, including compulsory retirement, severe reprimands, and warning letters.
The decisions were reached during the Commission's plenary meeting held at its corporate headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement issued on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, by the PSC's Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Mr Torty Njoku Kalu. The Commission said the four dismissed officers were found culpable of serious offences after a thorough disciplinary process. In addition to the dismissals, the Commission approved a range of disciplinary measures affecting several other officers across different ranks.
According to the statement, 10 senior officers were reduced in rank as part of the disciplinary exercise. The demotions included three Superintendents of Police who were reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police; two Deputy Superintendents of Police who were demoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police; and five Assistant Superintendents of Police who were reduced to the rank of Inspector. Beyond the dismissals and demotions, the PSC sanctioned 31 other officers over various disciplinary infractions. The Commission also approved the compulsory retirement of two officers, saying the decision was taken "in the public interest." Other sanctions included severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five officers, warning letters for three officers, and a letter of advice issued to one officer. However, seven officers were cleared of all allegations after investigations found no evidence linking them to any wrongdoing.
Reacting to the decisions, the Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, reiterated the board's zero-tolerance policy towards indiscipline in the Nigeria Police Force. He warned that the current board would not condone any form of misconduct by police officers and that the Commission would continue to uphold discipline and match all forms of misconduct with commensurate disciplinary actions. Argungu, however, assured that officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary service would continue to receive recognition and motivation under the Commission's reward system. He reiterated the Commission's commitment to promoting accountability, professionalism, and public confidence in policing through strict enforcement of disciplinary standards.
The sweeping disciplinary action is part of ongoing efforts by the Police Service Commission to sanitise the force and restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police. The PSC has repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate acts capable of undermining the integrity and professionalism of the force. With the dismissal of four senior officers, the demotion of 10 others, and sanctions on 31 more, the Commission has sent a clear message that misconduct will be met with severe consequences, regardless of rank.
