The countdown to the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association has officially begun, with the legal community eagerly anticipating a landmark gathering scheduled to take place from 21 to 28 August 2026 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Under the bold and inspiring theme "Beyond Limits," the conference promises to be one of the most impactful assemblies of legal minds in recent history, drawing thousands of lawyers, judges, policymakers, academics, and industry leaders from across Nigeria and beyond.
The theme and logo for the 2026 Annual General Conference were officially unveiled on 16 January 2026 at the NBA National Secretariat in Abuja by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN. Describing "Beyond Limits" as a strategic mandate, Osigwe challenged members of the legal profession to rise above conventional boundaries, embrace innovation, and respond decisively to the evolving demands of justice, governance, and professional excellence. The theme, he explained, is a call to action for lawyers and other stakeholders to be part of finding solutions to Nigeria's pressing problems rather than merely complaining about them. The Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, Abdul Mohammed, SAN, elaborated on the significance of the theme, stating that the Bar intends to go beyond the outdated system, beyond complacency, division, fear, and societal expectations, noting that the conference logo, which features a mountain slanted sideways, symbolises the aspiration to transcend limits, just as humanity conquered Mount Everest.
The choice of Port Harcourt as the host city for the 2026 conference marks a significant return of the NBA's flagship event to the South-South region. President Osigwe emphasised that this decision reflects the NBA's commitment to inclusiveness, national balance, and deliberate engagement with members across all regions of the country. The declaration drew a rousing standing ovation from members, particularly the NBA Port Harcourt Branch, marking a celebratory moment for the city that had originally been slated to host the 2025 AGC before it was relocated to Enugu due to a state of emergency declared in Rivers State.
The Conference Planning Committee, chaired by Abdul Mohammed, SAN, has assured members of the Bar of a world-class conference experience, focused on curating a conference that meets global standards in content, organisation, logistics, and delegate experience, worthy of the stature of the Nigerian Bar Association. Preparations have been underway since the unveiling, with the committee working diligently to deliver a high-caliber experience that aligns with international organisational standards.
The response to the conference has been overwhelming. As of 1 April 2026, the NBA had officially surpassed 18,345 registered conferees, setting the stage for a landmark edition of the AGC. This milestone reflects the legal community's enthusiasm for the "Beyond Limits" theme and the opportunity to converge in Port Harcourt for high-level discourse, networking, and professional development. Registration for the conference has been structured in phases, with the regular registration deadline closing on 31 May 2026, after which late registration fees apply. Conference materials are limited, and attendees have been encouraged to finalise their registrations promptly to secure their participation and essential conference items.
The 2026 AGC promises a robust programme featuring distinguished speakers and thought leaders. The NBA-SLP has secured former Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, as a Keynote participant for its fireside chat session, where he will bring his wealth of experience in governance, law, and public policy to bear on discussions at the conference. Additionally, the NBA Women Forum has announced that the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, will serve as a keynote speaker. The event will interrogate developments in legal technology, cross-border transactions, corporate governance, and dispute resolution, while also addressing regulatory and policy shifts impacting legal practice.
In a significant parallel development, the NBA President also launched a dedicated co-working space for young lawyers at the National Secretariat in Abuja. Described as a practical and timely intervention aimed at addressing unemployment and structural challenges confronting early-career legal practitioners, the facility provides young lawyers with a professional and dignified environment to meet clients, work, collaborate, and remain actively engaged with legal practice. The project was executed through the NBA Welfare Committee under the leadership of Chief James Onoja, SAN, who personally funded and donated the facility to the Nigerian Bar Association. The NBA President publicly commended Chief Onoja for his generosity and deep commitment to the welfare of young lawyers, describing the project as an example of purposeful leadership and genuine service to the profession.
In a symbolic gesture recognising enduring contributions to the legal profession, the NBA announced that the co-working facility has been named after Chief Kanu Agabi, CON, SAN, former Attorney-General of the Federation. The Association explained that the naming reflects Chief Agabi's lifelong commitment to mentorship, ethical advocacy, intellectual excellence, and his consistent support for younger members of the Bar. The NBA described the initiative as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the profession from its foundation and called on branches across the country to replicate similar co-working spaces to support young lawyers at the grassroots.
Adding a sporting dimension to the conference, no fewer than 30 NBA branches will contest the 2026 NBA Annual General Congress President's Cup football competition in Port Harcourt, fostering camaraderie and healthy competition among legal practitioners from across the country.
As the legal community prepares to gather in Port Harcourt, the NBA has called on all members of the Bar to be part of the journey. The conference promises to be a convergence of legal minds, policy drivers, jurists, and industry leaders, offering an engaging, enriching, and impactful experience. With the theme "Beyond Limits," the 2026 NBA Annual General Conference invites every lawyer to rise above challenges, push boundaries, and contribute to redefining the limits of the legal profession in Nigeria. The countdown is on. Port Harcourt awaits.
