The National President of the Police Officers' Wives Association (POWA), Chief (Mrs.) Olufunmilola Disu, has called on women across Nigeria to embrace skills development and emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), as vital pathways to economic empowerment, financial independence, and self-reliance. Disu made the appeal on Monday, 13 July 2026, during a visit to the POWA Skill Acquisition Centre at Dei-Dei Barracks in Abuja, where she interacted with trainees, instructors and management staff across various departments of the institution.
Addressing the trainees after touring the facility, the POWA president stressed the importance of acquiring practical and relevant skills in today's rapidly evolving world, noting that vocational training and digital literacy are essential tools for achieving long-term success. She particularly encouraged participants to explore the opportunities presented by Artificial Intelligence and other digital technologies, describing them as indispensable tools capable of enhancing productivity, creativity and innovation across different professions and businesses.
During the visit, Disu inspected various sections of the centre, including Adult Education, Baking and Confectionery, Tailoring, Hairdressing and Information and Communication Technology (ICT), where she commended the trainees for their commitment to learning and self-development. She later met with the management and staff of the centre to assess its operational needs and identify areas requiring improvement. Reaffirming her commitment to the growth of the institution, she pledged support for improved staff welfare as well as maintenance and upgrades to create a more conducive environment for learning and skills acquisition.
According to Disu, equipping women with practical skills, knowledge and access to technology remains central to POWA's vision of strengthening families and building more resilient communities within the police ecosystem. She said the visit underscores the association's continued commitment to promoting education, innovation and sustainable economic empowerment among members of the police community.
Her remarks come amid growing global recognition of the transformative potential of AI and digital technologies in reshaping livelihoods and creating new opportunities for women. By urging women to embrace both vocational training and digital literacy, Disu is positioning POWA as a key player in the drive to bridge the digital gender gap and empower women to participate actively in Nigeria's digital economy. The POWA Skill Acquisition Centre at Dei-Dei Barracks serves as a practical platform for this vision, offering women from police families the opportunity to acquire marketable skills that can enhance their earning potential and improve their quality of life.
The visit and the president's call to action have been welcomed by trainees and stakeholders, many of whom see the emphasis on AI and digital skills as a forward-looking approach to women's empowerment. As the economic landscape continues to evolve, Disu's message is clear: women must not be left behind, and acquiring relevant skills remains the surest path to financial independence and sustainable development.
