A police inspector is battling severe facial injuries after he was allegedly shot at close range by a fellow officer following a heated altercation at the Iju Police Division in Lagos, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns about discipline, firearm handling, and internal conflict within the Nigeria Police Force. The shooting occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, 12 July 2026, shortly after Inspector Aminu Nuhu completed his night station guard duty and was handing over to Police Constable Lateef Afeez, who had resumed for the morning shift, according to an internal police signal obtained by SaharaReporters.

The internal signal detailed the sequence of events that led to the shooting. "Today, July 12, 2026, at about 0900 hours, Inspector Aminu Nuhu, serving at this command, who had just completed night station guard duty, had an altercation with Force No. 557536, Police Constable Lateef Afeez, also serving at this command and posted for morning station guard duty," the signal read. What began as a routine handover reportedly escalated into a heated argument between the two officers. The disagreement turned violent when the inspector allegedly threw stones at the constable. In response, Constable Afeez allegedly retaliated by firing the riot gun that had been issued to him for guard duty, striking Inspector Nuhu in the face at close range. The blast caused grievous injuries to the inspector's mouth and right cheek.

The inspector was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Ifako, for emergency treatment but was later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, due to the severity of his injuries. Police authorities arrested and disarmed the constable shortly after the incident. He is currently in detention, and the case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, for a full-scale investigation after preliminary inquiries. Police authorities have stated that further developments will be communicated as investigations progress. The incident has reignited debates about internal discipline, supervision, and the handling of firearms within the police force, particularly in a country where public confidence in law enforcement remains fragile.
