A man has died after being swept away by floodwaters during heavy rainfall in Calabar, Cross River State, in an incident that has renewed concerns over the city’s recurring flooding challenges.
The incident occurred on Friday, 17 July 2026, along Elijah Henshaw Street, Calabar, when the victim was reportedly carried away by fast-moving floodwaters caused by intense rainfall in the area.
Residents said the man was overwhelmed by the force of the water and was later found inside a drainage gutter after community youths began a search operation. His body was recovered in the presence of officials from the Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA).
The incident has caused sadness among residents and raised fresh concerns about the dangers posed by flooding in parts of Calabar, where poor drainage systems, blocked waterways and heavy rainfall have repeatedly contributed to flooding incidents.
Community members have continued to call on relevant authorities to take stronger measures to address drainage challenges, improve flood management systems and prevent further loss of lives during periods of heavy rainfall.
Flooding remains a recurring environmental challenge in several Nigerian cities, particularly during the rainy season, with experts often warning that improved urban planning, maintenance of drainage channels and early warning systems are necessary to reduce the impact on communities.
Authorities have yet to release further details about the identity of the deceased or provide an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy adds to growing concerns about public safety during extreme weather conditions, as residents are urged to exercise caution around flooded areas and fast-moving waters.
