Residents of Mercyland (Jabe CDA), 3rd Power Line, Oke Eletu, Ijede area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, have reportedly started leaving the community following a series of armed robbery attacks, including the killing of a Community Development Association (CDA) executive.

The latest incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 12, when armed attackers reportedly invaded the community between 1am and 2am. A resident and CDA executive, identified as Abdulazeez Olaoye T.A., was killed after allegedly being attacked with machetes.

Residents said the attack was the latest in a series of security incidents affecting the area, with some community members claiming it was the sixth robbery attack recorded since the beginning of the year.

According to residents, the attackers operated for nearly two hours, breaking into homes, attacking occupants and stealing cash, mobile phones and other valuables before leaving the community.

A resident, Adekunle Olamide, said the attackers invaded several houses during the operation, destroying surveillance equipment before forcing their way into buildings.

He said one victim was attacked with a machete while attempting to protect himself, suffering a severe injury to his finger which required medical treatment.

Another resident, Obisesan Taiye, said the attackers also entered a block of eight flats, gaining access to five apartments while occupants of the remaining flats managed to escape.

He added that two residents sustained serious machete injuries during the attack and were receiving treatment at a hospital.

Residents alleged that Olaoye was attacked while attempting to alert members of the community about the ongoing robbery and prevent the criminals from extending their operation to other areas.

Community members said the repeated attacks have created fear among residents, with some families now considering relocating from the area.

Residents also claimed that previous attacks had affected several streets, including Kamoru Street, Albert Street and Badejo Ososanya Street, leaving many people traumatised and concerned about their safety.

They have appealed to the Lagos State Government, security agencies and the police authorities to increase security presence in the community, investigate the killing and take urgent steps to prevent further attacks.

The growing concerns in Ikorodu come amid wider public anxiety over insecurity in parts of Lagos and other Nigerian cities, with residents calling for improved intelligence gathering, faster response systems and stronger community protection measures.
