Troops of Sector 4, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), have confirmed a deadly attack on Gana Ropp village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, where suspected Fulani militias killed a 19-year-old woman and injured two others. The attack, which occurred at about 10:45 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, has heightened concerns over the recurring cycle of violence in Plateau's rural communities, where clashes between farming and herding groups have continued to claim lives despite sustained military operations.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that troops responded to a distress call reporting an attack in the community. Upon arrival at the scene, the soldiers discovered that the assailants had shot dead Miss Asamau Saleh, 19. Two other victims, identified as Aminu Saleh, 26, and Stephen Monday, 28, sustained gunshot wounds during the attack. The injured victims were promptly evacuated by the troops and taken to the Barkin Ladi General Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Security personnel have since launched a manhunt for the attackers, while efforts are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible. The attack underscores the persistent security challenges in parts of Plateau State, where farmer-herder crises have fueled a cycle of violence that has left hundreds dead and thousands displaced over the years. Despite the presence of security forces, communities in Barkin Ladi and neighbouring local government areas have continued to bear the brunt of these attacks.
The killing of the 19-year-old woman and the injury of two others at Gana Ropp village is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Barkin Ladi, which has witnessed recurring attacks in communities such as Razat, Ruku, Nyarr, Kura, and Gana-Ropp. In recent months, several lives have been lost in similar assaults, with residents living in constant fear of further violence. The Plateau State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but troops have intensified patrols in the area to prevent further attacks and reassure residents of their safety.
As the manhunt for the perpetrators continues, residents of Gana Ropp and surrounding communities have called on the government to take more decisive action to end the cycle of violence and protect vulnerable communities. The attack serves as a grim reminder of the human cost of insecurity in Nigeria's Middle Belt, where the failure to address the root causes of farmer-herder conflicts has allowed violence to persist with devastating consequences.
