Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Vice-Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a blunt and sobering warning to state governors hoping to manipulate their way to re-election in 2027, declaring that Nigerians are no longer willing to rubber-stamp incumbents who have failed to deliver on their promises. Speaking on Sunday in Abuja during the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Personality Interview Series, the former Kano State governor said many governors who have underperformed and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in search of political cover will be sorely disappointed. "What I foresee in the 2027 elections is that most of the governors seeking re-election will be disappointed because people will not support them," Kwankwaso said.

Kwankwaso argued that growing dissatisfaction with insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and deteriorating public services is driving a fundamental shift in voter consciousness across Nigeria. According to him, Nigerians are becoming more politically aware and will no longer support politicians simply because they control government structures or have the backing of the presidency. He pointed to the millions of children out of school and the insecurity affecting communities nationwide as evidence that citizens have legitimate reasons to demand better governance. "Governors who think they can use electoral manipulation and control of state structures to remain in office beyond 2027 will be disappointed," he declared.

The NDC vice-presidential candidate also criticised the growing trend of opposition politicians defecting to the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, alleging that many are making the switch purely to exploit the party's perceived electoral advantage. He described the movement as an attempt by some politicians to secure political advantage through the party's political machinery, rather than through service to the people. Kwankwaso, however, expressed confidence that voters would ultimately determine the outcome of the election, regardless of the political structures controlled by incumbent governors. He urged political leaders to pay greater attention to citizens' concerns and recognise when voters are demanding a change in leadership.

Reflecting on his own tenure as Kano State governor, Kwankwaso recalled how his administration prioritised education by expanding access to primary, secondary and tertiary education for qualified residents. He also implemented programmes to address the Almajiri challenge and invested in educational infrastructure, including student hostels. According to him, this experience demonstrated that governments can significantly improve citizens' welfare when available resources are properly prioritised. He argued that governments can improve citizens' lives when public resources are properly prioritised and used to address pressing needs.

Kwankwaso's warning comes at a time when political realignments are intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several governors already positioning themselves for re-election. His comments reflect growing tensions within Nigeria's political landscape, and his warnings suggest that voter frustration over service delivery failures could reshape electoral outcomes regardless of incumbent advantage. As the 2027 elections approach, the message from the NDC vice-presidential candidate is clear: the era of electoral manipulation and state-backed incumbency may be coming to an end, and the will of the people may prove stronger than the machinery of power.
