A gruesome discovery in the quiet Obelewo area of Osogbo, Osun State, has sent shockwaves through the community and left police investigators scrambling for answers after the lifeless body of an unidentified woman was found inside a church premises with her left wrist severed and taken away by her killers. The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the horrifying incident on Sunday, August 16, 2026, describing the scene as one of unimaginable brutality that has raised fresh fears about the safety of residents and the rising tide of ritualistic violence in the state.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, police detectives were dispatched to the scene following the discovery of the body on the church grounds. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had been slaughtered, and her left wrist was severed and removed by unknown persons. "The investigations revealed that the deceased was slaughtered and her left wrist severed and taken away by unknown persons," Iniedu said, according to multiple reports from Punch, Naija News, and Daily Post on August 17, 2026. The police spokesperson noted that the circumstances surrounding the woman's death and the motive behind the killing were yet to be ascertained.
The identity of the deceased remains unknown as investigators work to establish who she was and what led to her tragic end. Iniedu disclosed that the corpse had been deposited at a hospital mortuary for autopsy as part of efforts to gather further evidence. The State Command's Investigation Department has since taken over the case and commenced investigations aimed at identifying those responsible and determining the motive behind the killing. The police have not disclosed whether any arrests have been made or whether any suspect has been identified in connection with the case.
The Obelewo area of Osogbo, where the body was found, is a residential neighbourhood that has not previously been associated with such violent crimes. The discovery of a mutilated body on church premises has added a chilling dimension to the incident, raising questions about the sanctity of places of worship and the growing audacity of criminals operating in the state. The removal of the victim's left wrist has led to widespread speculation about ritualistic motives, a pattern that has been observed in other violent crimes across Nigeria. In May 2015, a similar incident occurred in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where a woman was found dead with her private parts mutilated.
The Osun State Police Command has urged members of the public to remain calm and assist with any information that could help identify the deceased or lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the reality that even the sanctuary of a church could become a scene of such unspeakable violence. The search for answers has begun, but for now, the identity of the woman and the identity of her killers remain shrouded in mystery, leaving a community to mourn a life that was taken in the most brutal of circumstances.
