Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has delivered a withering assessment of Manchester United's prospects for the 2026/2027 season, declaring that the Red Devils will not win the Premier League or the Champions League under Michael Carrick because the manager lacks the necessary "stardust" to guide the club back to the pinnacle of European football.

Carrick, 45, was appointed United's permanent manager this summer following a remarkable interim spell that saw him lead the club to a third-place finish in the Premier League and secure Champions League qualification after two seasons outside Europe's elite competition. The former United midfielder recorded statement victories over Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool during his temporary tenure, earning the trust of the club's hierarchy and fans alike.

However, Carragher has urged caution, arguing that while Carrick has brought much-needed stability to Old Trafford, his managerial ceiling falls short of the elite level required to win the biggest trophies. Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher said: "What Manchester United have had for the last six months, need that for another 12 months of not being the circus, not being the story all the time, and Carrick brings you that". "But has he got that stardust to win the biggest trophy? I personally just don't think Michael Carrick's got that stardust as a manager to win a Champions League or a Premier League".

The Liverpool icon suggested that Carrick's primary role should be to stabilise the club and restore its status as a Champions League regular, rather than being the man to deliver silverware. "I don't believe Michael Carrick will win the league or the Champions League with Manchester United, but he's done a really good job. He could have a good season and put Manchester United in a position to then go and get a Champions League-winning manager," Carragher added.

Carragher likened Carrick's situation to a player who lifts a team to a certain level before a more elite presence is required to cross the finish line. He argued that while Carrick has successfully "calmed the circus" at Old Trafford, he lacks the intangible qualities needed to outduel the likes of Pep Guardiola or Carlo Ancelotti on the grandest stages.

Carrick has moved to strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign, with midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arriving from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively. However, Carragher believes United missed a trick in the transfer window, particularly in failing to land a Spurs signing he identified as a missed opportunity.

The pundit's comments have sparked debate among United supporters, many of whom have embraced Carrick's calm and composed approach after years of turmoil under previous managers. Carragher acknowledged the value of stability, stating: "With Carrick... there's no circus around United. It feels very calm. He came in, calmed everything down, got Champions League football. The aim for Manchester United next season is to make sure they're in the Champions League again".

But he warned that achieving that baseline should not automatically secure Carrick's long-term future, emphasising that domestic stability merely buys the board time to make a calculated appointment. "If United could get Champions League football again, that still doesn't necessarily mean Michael Carrick should stay. But you want to be in a position... to maybe keep Carrick - if he's done another good job - or you go and get that Champions League-winning manager," Carragher added.

Carragher's assessment places Manchester United firmly outside the title conversation for the 2026/2027 season, with the pundit instead tipping a private battle between Manchester City and Arsenal for Premier League supremacy. The Liverpool legend has also ruled out his former club from the title race, leaving City and Arsenal as his only contenders.

For United, the challenge is clear: Carrick must not only maintain the stability he has brought but also prove he possesses the "stardust" that Carragher insists he lacks. With the Premier League season now underway, the pressure on the former midfielder to deliver results has never been greater.
