A 27-year-old man, Ali Haruna, has confessed to the gruesome killing and beheading of a woman identified simply as Aisha inside a hotel in Girei, Adamawa State, in a chilling account that has left investigators and the public grappling with the depths of human depravity. Haruna, who hails from Kaleri in Maiduguri, Borno State, but resides in Digno community, Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, was arrested on Friday, August 14, 2026, following the discovery of the victim's body at No Vex Hotel in Girei town, on the outskirts of Yola, the state capital. The arrest and subsequent confession have raised urgent questions about the circumstances surrounding the killing and the motives that drove a man to commit such an atrocity against a woman he had met for the first time that day.
According to the suspect's confession, which he made while speaking to journalists at the Adamawa State Police Command headquarters in Yola on Monday, August 17, Haruna recounted that he and Aisha had met for the first time at the hotel, where they smoked Indian hemp and had sexual intercourse before the incident occurred. The encounter, which began as what might have been a casual meeting, descended into unimaginable violence when Haruna allegedly killed and beheaded the woman, subsequently drinking her blood. The disturbing details of the confession have sent shockwaves through the community and heightened concerns over the rising incidence of violent crimes in the state.
The police were alerted to the incident following reports of an altercation at the hotel. Operatives attached to the Girei Divisional Police Headquarters responded swiftly and found the victim lying in a pool of blood with severe injuries, including a deep cut to her neck. She was rushed to a medical facility, where a doctor confirmed her death. Haruna was arrested at the scene, and a knife suspected to have been used in the commission of the offence was recovered and preserved as an exhibit. The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the arrest and the suspect's confession, stating that Haruna would remain in police custody until the conclusion of the investigation, after which he would be charged in court.
The Commissioner of Police, Kabir Hassan, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case and conduct a discreet and thorough investigation to establish the circumstances and motive behind the alleged killing. The police have assured the public that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law and have urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and refrain from taking the law into their own hands while the investigation continues. Meanwhile, an eyewitness who spoke to Weekend Punch claimed that the suspect had confessed to having killed two other people earlier in the year, though this claim remains unverified and was not included in the police statement.
The beheading of Aisha at No Vex Hotel in Girei is the latest in a series of violent crimes that have plagued Adamawa State in recent months. In January 2024, a similar incident occurred at the Happy Day Guest Inn in Yola, where a woman was beheaded by a suspected ritual killer who fled with her head. The Adamawa State Government subsequently ordered hoteliers to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in their facilities to enhance security and deter such crimes. However, the recurrence of such incidents suggests that more needs to be done to protect vulnerable individuals and prevent the exploitation of hotel facilities for criminal purposes.
The case of Ali Haruna serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk behind seemingly ordinary encounters. The fact that the victim and the suspect met for the first time on the day of the killing underscores the vulnerability of individuals who engage in casual relationships with strangers, particularly in unregulated environments. The police have called on members of the public to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. As the investigation continues, the community is left to grapple with the horrifying details of a crime that has shaken the conscience of the state and raised urgent questions about the prevalence of violence and the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in addressing such heinous acts.
