A grieving pregnant woman has accused Nigerian soldiers of killing her husband, a community youth leader in Plateau State, and subsequently dumping his body at a hospital while circulating his photographs online with false claims that he was a bandit. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, August 9, 2026, has ignited outrage among residents and church members who insist that the deceased, identified only as Fwansgshak, was a respected community leader involved in local security efforts, not an armed criminal as the military allegedly portrayed.
Fwansgshak and his wife, Sandra, had been married for barely eight months when tragedy struck. The couple had married on December 13, 2025, and were expecting their first child. On the fateful Sunday afternoon, they had returned from church and were discussing the deteriorating security situation in their community, particularly after a young man was ambushed on his way to church earlier that day about three miles away. Sandra, who was pregnant, was deeply concerned about the safety of their unborn child.
Fwansgshak, who served as a youth leader in the community, was responsible for mobilising a local volunteer security team comprising about ten young men. The volunteers, poorly equipped with homemade pipe guns, were tasked with protecting more than 500 residents from persistent attacks by armed groups. When gunshots were heard around the community, the volunteers attempted to reach soldiers stationed about two miles away to respond. But when the soldiers failed to respond, Fwansgshak and the local security volunteers moved towards the direction of the gunfire to protect residents.
Community members said the volunteers succeeded in pushing the attackers back towards the forest. However, when soldiers later arrived at the scene, they reportedly opened fire on the civilian security volunteers instead of pursuing the fleeing attackers. Fwansgshak was struck by machine-gun fire and killed. The soldiers were then accused of taking his body away and dumping it at a nearby hospital. His family and community members were later shocked to see photographs of Fwansgshak circulating online, accompanied by claims that he was a bandit who had fired at soldiers.
His wife, church members, and fellow community security volunteers have rejected that account, insisting that Fwansgshak was a community leader who was responding to a security threat and was not an armed criminal. Speaking after a church service, Sandra recalled the brevity of their marriage. "They said he was a bandit in your community. They said you should arrest him and take him away to be detained in your community. They said he was a bandit. I only lived with him for eight months. I didn't even complete the eight months. It was during those eight months that he was killed," she said.
Although she has cried over her husband's death, she knows that crying cannot bring him back. "It's okay. I just thanked God. I cried, but even if I cried, he wouldn't come back. They killed him, right? There's nothing I can do about it," Sandra said. She also spoke emotionally about the child she is carrying, insisting that her husband's death would not mean the end of his legacy. "But if they think Fati has gone, Fati is still here. He left me pregnant. Fati is not dead. Fati will come back. I believe in God. This child will grow up and become somebody. It's okay. I am grateful," she said.
The account given by Sandra is supported by the testimony of Fwansgshak's church, where he reportedly served as secretary, as well as members of the local security team who allegedly witnessed the encounter. Community members said the circumstances of his death were particularly disturbing because he was killed while attempting to respond to a security emergency after authorities reportedly failed to intervene. They also questioned how a man who was known within the community as a youth leader and local security volunteer was subsequently presented to the public as a bandit.
The allegations raise fresh concerns about the conduct of security personnel operating in communities affected by armed attacks, particularly where civilian volunteers are involved in responding to attacks before security forces arrive. The family and community are demanding answers over what happened on August 9 and why Fwansgshak was killed and subsequently portrayed as a bandit. The Defence Headquarters has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
As the community mourns and Sandra prepares to raise their child alone, the question remains: will the military investigate this killing, or will Fwansgshak become another victim of Nigeria's cycle of impunity?
